Aaronz28
My SS454 air cleaner was refinished previously in a flat black.... is that correct? or should it be gloss? or semi?and as long as I'm asking - pulleys? brackets? gloss? semi? for original accuracy
Rob Peters
Not sure about the pulley's but I think both the air cleaner and brackets would be simi-gloss. rob
stangeba
Semi gloss. Long answer, I'm chatty today....... Back in the day, GM used a product DuPont called "black dip". It was a primer that you dipped parts into, then baked them at 400 F, for 1/2 hour. This was the same product the body was dipped into prior to the invention by FORD of ELPO aka Electro deposition Primer also called E-Coat PPG then purchased the rights from FORD and they really sold the heck out of it. The gloss level (IMO) was closer to semi gloss but the industry had very specific testing procedures and specs for the actual gloss level measured at a 20 degree or 60 degree angle with the gloss meter based on high or low gloss. When restoring my 71, I worked at DuPont automotive finishes, Troy Michigan laboratory, where I had free access to black dip primer. I dipped everything I could and it held help up very well. When it came to the air cleaner, I could NOT bake the vacuum control dash pots because the rubber inside would melt @ 400 F. so I went super high gloss IMRON black and love the look. You may have noticed, I added a second air inlet on the driver side in 1971 after my brother in-law brought one home for me from the Warren tech center where he was a power train engineer at Chevrolet. Since I don't have A/C, it fit great. I blocked off the bottom inlet where the heat tube would have gone and tee'e into the vacuum hose. Today sadly they both leak so they are unplugged at the carb.
