mikeringland
I'm looking to convert my points system to electronic ignition. What do I need for parts, and can I leave the existing distributor itself installed? Thanks, Mike
cny first gen 71
Pertronix makes a conversion that you put right in your dist. Easy to follow instructions too. I put mine in about five or six years ago and havent thought about it since.
wallaby
The pertronix kit seems to be most popular, but it gets mixed reviews on Summit racing website. I have heard it burns up if the key is on with the engine not running. American Autowire has a kit without this problem, but it costs more than the Pertronix. There used to be many options for this conversion, but they have all become obsolete. I guess the world is just buying ready-made electronic distributors or using HEI. 7tonemonte
I used the Petronix kit as well, it's been about 12 years now, never had an issue. I haven't left my key on without the car running for any length of time, but it's the first I've heard of that. Very easy conversion, cost effective, and best of all, no points to deal with! Sam (Bones)
the key to success with the Pertronix is using the correct parts, using a incorrect coil will kill the magnetic pick-up, follow Pertronix recommendations and you won't have any issues
