Dtret
Can someone please clarify what keys operate what locks. My car has square ignition key. All keys were lost and previous owner replaced steering column with new switch and key. I need to buy a complete lock set but I cannot seem to find any consistency from parts suppliers on what keys do what. I need ignition, doors, trunk, glove box and counsel. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance
Paul Bell
Square ignition key works the doors and ignition. Round key works the glove box, center console and trunk. This is so a car parking guy can open the doors and start the engine but not get into your locked storage.
Canuck
The square key should do the door and ignition. The round key should do the trunk and glove box.
Paul Bell
Dennis, you'd need to buy two sets: https://www.opgi.com/keys-locks/lock-sets/lock-key-set-ignition-door/lock-set-ignitiondoors-1969-78-gm-kk26046.html https://www.opgi.com/keys-locks/lock-sets/lock-key-set-glove-box-trunk-console/lock-set-glove-boxtrunkconsole-1970-72-chevellemonte-carlo-ch23707.html You'll need gaskets: https://www.opgi.com/gaskets-seals/weatherstripping-rubber-details/lock-cylinder-gaskets6/1957-88-door-trunk-lock-cylinder-gasket-kit-3-pcs-dlg1010.html The glove box cylinder is pretty tricky. Remove the door and do it on a well lit workbench.
Dtret
Thanks for the help. The answer is what I thought it should be but I wanted verification from the professionals
1970mcss
If you have the correct ignition key and door cylinders you could try to see if a local dealer could rebuild the cylinders to match the keys. When I worked for a dealer years ago we rebuilt them all the time. Good luck
