Kevin Wiles
sometimes when i crank the coke machine (427 w/ quadrajet) it will spit and sputter and backfire like crazy. when i lift the hood I see that the problem is that the choke is on. I lift the linkage from the little coil that sits on the intake, and it begins to run great. problem is, as soon as any gas is given, it goes back to choke. (1/2 choke or so) So the only way to get it to run right is to tie the choke open, basically disabling it. what can i do to make it operate correctly? Guest ADGTRUNKLID
I would say sit back and have a Pepsi while it warms up Perhaps a new spring is in order?
Sam (Bones)
what about the choke pull-off (vacuum diaphragm)
Mike 57
I think Sam hit it right on the head. The choke unloader is probably shot the diaphragm is most likely leaking and and not able to open the choke once the engine starts.
7tonemonte
That was the problem with my Olds, nothing a screwdriver in the carb couldnt fix!! Once that was taken care of and fixed, it was good as new. You could always go manual choke on it
kc8oye
i agree, sounds like the vacuum diaphragm isn't pulling the choke open when the engine fires.. make sure it's attached to a manifold vacuum nipple and not a ported
