Monte123
I am converting from auto to standard, is the location for the z bar bracket pre drilled on the frame or do I have to “locate” it. This is for a
Mike Brichta
When I converted my 72, the holes were already in the frame. No drilling was required. Good luck!! Mike
MCfan
Hey, Tony, I've attached a couple of photos of pages in from the '70 Factory Assembly Manual that may be useful to you as I doubt the '72 was any different. The stud that goes into the block casting boss just forward of the bell housing will position that end of the Z-bar and will also help locate the bracket on the other end if you keep the Z- bar pivot shaft perpendicular to the centerline of your motor. As shown in Section A of the assembly drawing, the bracket is placed close to the outside edge of the frame (as it is also on my '70 factory 4-speed). One of the last auto-to-manual conversions I remember reading about on this forum was done by Murray Rehder on his '71 small block about 3 years ago. You might want to send him a Private Message at his club ID which is "Murphy" if you have specific questions on this conversion for a first gen Monte. Also, here's a link to a thread less than two years ago asking who has first gens with manual transmissions: https://www.firstgenmc.com/forums/index.php?/topic/19613-manual-transmission-montes/&tab=comments#comment-199974 You might be able to find some other contacts there if you need them. Good luck.

Mike Same when I did my old '72 Custom years ago, first with the LT1 350, then the LS6 454, no issues that I recall. Bolt in parts from a Chevelle I thought. Holes are already in the frame. Mike Brichta
Actually if I remember correctly, the frame bracket for the Chevelle/El Camino and Monte are different. Can someone else confirm? Mike
Monte123
Thank you all, yes, the bracket is different but I do have it. I apologize, I did not look before asking the question. The holes are in the frame. Looks like the proportioning valve may have to move. Will keep you posted. I have to get it running and move it over to a buddy's. Bought a 5 speed kit from SST for it
jft69z
This place below says the part number 3972641 (item #7 in diagram) is specific to 70-72 Monte's too. Maybe I got one from a dealer years ago when I built that car, or modified a Chevelle one to fit? I still have the Z-bar up in the attic, but must have left that bracket on the frame, or misplaced it because it's not with the Z-bar/bellhousing/shifter, etc. https://www.4speedconversions.com/3972641.html https://www.4speedconversions.com/3972641_r1.html https://www.chevelles.com/threads/4-speed-conversion.67031/
