It has the original rear bumper with additional bolts to

support the SS rubber gasket/pad. I'm not sure what he is talking about can someone explain? is this the blacked out strip accross the back with ss on it?

The blacked out strip is between the trunk lid and the bumper it is painted black on 71 SS cars it should also have trim at the top and bottom of the blacked out area. Hard to describe look at pics of 71 SS in the members Montes.

From the SS454 tech page on the site:

71SSback.JPG

"In 1971 the SS added additional markings on the rear of the car. This included having the "BY CHEVROLET" tag replaced by "SS", chrome strips added to the top of the rear panel below the trunk, the rear panel painted black and a rubber bumper pad."

The 71 SS got a horizontal rub strip on the crown of the rear bumper. That was the SS version of a bumper guard. Non- SS cars still had vertical rear bumper guards as an option. Therefore, there was a slight difference in the bumpers because of the holes that were drilled to mount the pad. 71 SS also got the chrome outline/ semi gloss black on the lower trunk panel along with SS letters instead of BY CHEVROLET.
