Fan shroud

It won’t hurt the car to run it without it but you better have an accurate temperature gauge ( not the light) to monitor the coolant temperature. If you overheat the engine you may end up with bigger problems. GM felt that the fan shroud was necessary. Be careful. Do you not have the fan shroud?

Sure ,if you want to add an electric fan.

Otherwise not advisable !!  Without the shroud, the fan is too far from the radiator to pull much air

If you don't move the air through the radiator with force, you're going to have heating issues.

I would stay with the stock sbc fan shroud. About 50% of the fans thickness should be inside the shroud for max efficiency. If this can’t be accomplished then, as Michael said go with electric fans incorporated with their own shroud.
