SB Oil pan gasket

1972mc

Recommended Posts

My oil pan leaks and have received new pan from engine mfg. They say there was a problem with a supplier.

For a standard 7 1/2" pan on a small block --what is the best gasket to use??? Part number would be good. What about checking pan for flatness. What is acceptable?

Thanks

Carl

Go with the one piece seal. Ask the supplier which seal for front, thick or thin. And install the gasket dry, no sealer except a small dab at the timing chain to block and rear main cap to block. Don't over torque the bolts, or it can push the gasket out.

Something else to look for is, if a previous owner did over tighten the pan bolts (this applies to all covers) you may have to push the bolt holes back out using a ball peen hammer. I've seen some really messed up rocker covers over the years from being way overtightened.

Good luck,

Bruce

There are 3 oil pan gaskets, the Early ones (the thin ones) which IIRC was used up to 1974, then 1975 they switched to the 'thick' style.. and then in 1986 when they switched to one-piece rear mains they went to a massively thick front seal.. so there are techniclly 3 oil pan seals for the 1st gen small block.

not counting the LT and LS series stuff :P~

Here is the info for the seal sizes.. (I grabbed it from hotrodders.com)

Quote:
The size of the seal you need is determined by the pan. Measure from the mounting surface where it bolts to the block down to the deepest part of the seal diameter.

2 1/4" = thin seal

2 3/8" = thick seal

Felpro one piece gaskets:

Thin seal (up to 1974): Part No. OS34509T

Thick Seal (1975 and later): Part No. OS34510T
