monte70car
Was wondering how much trans fuild we would need. The trans is a turbo 400 with a deep chrome pan and a exteral trans cooler which the trans is hooked to, the converter is dry.

CrazyDavey
Rob if I remember correctly,it's 10 to 12 quarts.Probably more with the deep pan & cooler. Â that's a good start Rob....you might want to start with about 8, let it warm up good and then add from there. It's easier to put it in than take it out... Andy's Auto
Jimmy, think with your dipstick! Yeah, I hate that commercial as well. Â Here is the best way. Fill the convertor with two quarts. It takes some time as the air will bubble out slowly. Pop the convertor in. Install the tranny. Fill the trans with five quarts then start it up for ten seconds. Add two more quarts. Start it up and run it through the gears. With the car running start adding whatever it takes to get the mark on the stick where it reads "full hot" Â A TH400 with a deep pan should hold right at 12.4 quarts of the red stuff. kc8oye
ACK!! that's a REALLLLY bad idea ert.. starting a trans with a dry converter can do a lot of damage.. Â it's sorta like firing up an engine for the first time w/o priming the oil system.. it's just not a good idea. Â fill the trans till the dipstick shows full. if it's a stock GM dipstick. .fill it almost to the bulge in the stick w/o the engine running.. fire it up.. and immediately shut it down again. hopefully it will be able to prime itself and suck the fluid down.. do that again, and then try to check the fluid with it running and see where you are at. Andy's Auto
It is in your best interest to pull it back out to fill the convertor. Like Timmay said, you should not do your tranny dry! Â Andy
