sewerman20
Just wondering if there are any tricks to removing and replacing lower control arm bushings? The front one is round and the rear is oval. Do I need to remove the welds or is there a metal sleeve in there that I am not seeing?
Sam (Bones)
do yourself a favor, take it to your local machine/parts store and have them pressed in for you. not that costly and a whole heck of a lot easier
allchevy
Shouldn't be any welds press fit only. Sam is right, if you don't have a press it won't happen without spilling some DNA. I've got a press and it was still a pain, but doable.
7tonemonte
Putting the new ones in the freezer a day or two ahead of time helps, but for a couple of bucks let a shop with a press do it.
MGD72Monte
You might find a small tack weld securing the bushing casing to the lower control arm (mine had that). That can be quickly ground off. Â If you're game, go for it, doing it yourself is always satisfying. I recommend getting a small press. There are ways to do it with a vise but with a press, it is a lot easier. Plus a press is worth the investment, you can now get a 12T one for about $100 if you catch a sale. Â Press the casing out until the casing end is flush with the arm, then press out the inner sleeve completely, then the rubber portion and then take an air chisel to the empty casing. Split it down the middle then use the air chisel on the ridge to finish pushing it out. Â Good luck
Sam (Bones)
trust me, the $10-20 bucks a shop will charge is well worth trying to do it yourself
sewerman20
Thanks, I think I will save the DNA and take them to a shop. Glad to hear mine are not the only ones with tack welds.
sewerman20
I'm looking to replace the lower control arm bolts also. I was told these are grade 10, is that correct? Any ideas where to find them? Thanks in advance.
amsterdam84
Mine had welds on them too which we put back on when replacing them.
