71 tubbed rear end question

Recommended Posts

Im replacing the floor pans in my 71 and I was thinking while I was at it I could extend the rear wells into the trunk a bit to get me a lil extra width back there rubber wise. Nothing extreme. Maybe 6 inches or so would be enough room. My question is how wide can I go before I need to be concerned with snapping an axle or modifying the suspension.

Thanks

As said above you won't gain much...I'll go one step further and say you won't gain a fraction of an inch without altering the frame. Using a mallet you can tap the stock wheel housing over a tiny bit and get the tire within a 1/4" to 3/8" like I did in the past. Here's a photo of how close you can get it. The gap in the picture is the tire to the frame.
