Will
Im replacing the floor pans in my 71 and I was thinking while I was at it I could extend the rear wells into the trunk a bit to get me a lil extra width back there rubber wise. Nothing extreme. Maybe 6 inches or so would be enough room. My question is how wide can I go before I need to be concerned with snapping an axle or modifying the suspension. Thanks Will
Ian
If I remember right the frame and the inner fender are in the same place, so just opening up the inner fender will not gain you much.
monte70car
As Ian stated you would have to more the frame to get those extra 6" of width for the tire.
Sam (Bones)
the wheel house and the frame are almost parallel, without doing the frame you might gain a inch or so....tops!
502ci
As said above you won't gain much...I'll go one step further and say you won't gain a fraction of an inch without altering the frame. Using a mallet you can tap the stock wheel housing over a tiny bit and get the tire within a 1/4" to 3/8" like I did in the past. Here's a photo of how close you can get it. The gap in the picture is the tire to the frame.
