  1. Bob, I just put a driveshaft in my Monte when I put a 700r4 in it. I can measure it for you if you would like. I got it 4 years ago from a FGMC member here who lives in VA. It fit perfect. I have a small block & 700r4. Just let me know and I'll measure tomorrow.
  2. Agree with MIke 100%. Why chance putting an unknown, used oil pan on your baby. You can buy an orange powdercoated pan at a great price.

    timing

Mine likes 14 initial timing, so 16 seems feasible.
  4. First, let me say you live in my most favorite area of the country. Lived in Greenville, SC for 5 years and vacation in Pigeon Forge. With that said sounds like you are concerned about the smoke. I have had the same and there short and long answers. Many possibilities here's a few of my personal experiences. 1). Valve seals. Even on a new GM crate engine, my seals were junk and blew smoke when I would start it or get on it. On rebuilt heads I have seen them smoke too. Not all rebuilt heads from machine shops are done right as "head" guys are really picky and good. 2). Rings not set in yet / or correctly and oil getting past them.
  5. Dave, I am using them because I got a great price. I initially had roller tip and before that stock. They have about 3,000 miles on them and got the rockers and the nuts for $45. Still debating. Mom's car:
  6. OK, here is what you need: Rag joint: Dorman part #31011 (around $42 US) High pressure insert: Lee Manufacturing, 888-698-6679 ($4) Low pressure insert: Lee Manufacturing ($4)/ George
  7. you can also use a Monte SS box from 83-88 or a Camaro / Trans Am steering box from 83-92. Got mine for $35. Do you need the rag joint # to order? How about the flare inserts?
  8. Yes, I know of the solid lifters noise, was wondering if the aluminum full roller rockers make a noise? I assume no. The roller tip steel rockers did.
  9. I am ready to put the engine & trans back in the Monte so I can drive this bad boy. On this redo, when I added Edelbrock RPM heads, I started with stock rockers, went to roller tip and now full Procomp roller rockers. Question: do the roller rockers "tick" when running? That's one reason I took the roller tips off because on my sons engine they made noise and the engine builder told us before he assembled the engine that they'd make noise, and they did. If they tick too loud, I don't know that I am interested in running them. If not, I will.
  10. Andy's Auto: thanks. Was kinda thinking that. What is your preferred adjustment: 1/2 , 3/4 or 1 full turn as the final adjustment? I have done 1 full turn in the past on stock stamped rockers. Have Procomp rollers and was doing 1/2 turn.
  11. Just changed the rocker arms from standard to full roller. I had roller tip rockers on there and the same happened.
  12. I am adjusting the valves on my SBC. I tighten them 1/2 turn past preload. Have done this before several times and everything was fine. Tonight as I was doing this, for instance on #1 when you do both the intake and exhaust,I would go back (just a few minutes after final adjustment)and check and they would have "loosened" up a bit. That is, being able to turn the pushrod; whereas after I had just "Loaded" it, it would not turn. What's going on? When I adjusted before, I would never go back and check. Kinda strange.
  13. NGK 4323. $1.99 at O'Reillys and $2.09 and Advance Auto around here, but they'll price match. I have zero clearance problems.
  14. If you have 10psi for each 1000 rpm you are fine.
  15. As the oil heats up it hers thinner and will have a little less. As long as you don't hear lifters you should be fine. Is it an untouched and stock oil pump?
  16. Generally speaking you shouldest have 10psi for each 1,000 of RPM.
  17. I just cleaned, primed and painted mine and the rubber is great. Will replace the bolts, washers and nuts with stdainless steel. Replacing everything on the car with stainless.
  18. When I pulled the original springs out of my small block '71, there were rubber cushions on the top. Built in Maryland, maybe different by plant.
  19. While getting ready to put the 700r4 in the Monte I cleaned and painted the crossmember. Now I would like to replace the rubber bushings that go on each end of the crossmember. Cannot find them at any of the parts stores. Any recommendations?
  20. Looks good now. Clean.
  21. Jared, when you add in the parts needed, it is close to a complete kit purchased. Saving $100 maybe. Good option.
  22. Yes. www.spring-align.com I met them through the Northern IL. Chevelle Club. That's all they do. George
  23. Learning from my transmission guy, others in the same situation, one around 2,200 would be ideal. If you race alot you want more stall. I have that in my Monte and it works fine. You don't want a stock stall.
  24. Steering box for sure. The best is the 80's Monte SS box, but I have used the Pontiac GTA / Z28 3rd gen box. It is a quick ratio and the "feel" you get is so much nicer; unlike the original where you don't feel anything, these boxes provide an excellent feedback and road feel. I got mine from a guy here in Chicago that strips 3rd gen camaros for $35. Have to get the line fitting adapters from Lee Manuafacturing in CA. Those go in the new box and lets the original hoses be used.
  25. When I was considering Edelbrock heads a few weeks ago (bought the RPM's) I called the Tech Line for Eddy and they had all the answers I needed.
