  1. Congrats, good times
  2. I don't think I would go past 38 on timing. I would jet all 4 corners 2 numbers at a time. One change at a time! you will get there!
  3. Dull low pitch or sharp sounding? Does it have forged pistons? they knock until they get warm.
  4. Keep on working at it, you should get there! It gets addictive!
  5. It is a gen 6 bowtie block. Bore is 4.56 stroke is 4.25, 555 CID. Jesel belt drive. Cam timing is exact!
  6. There is really not much to mess up rebuilding a power steering pump, a seal, and a bushing. The bushing needs to be pressed so that is and issue for some people. the kit is cheep and you keep your original parts. There is so little to rebuild in one it would be hard to have a rebuilder screw it up. I might try NAPA instead of AutoZone. Summit seems steep.
  7. Finally got my short block complete. To see other pictures go here Engine build link
  8. Purchase the unit and have it installed. Everything will interchange. I would suggest new bearings but the shims should be he same. Make sure you get the right series carrier to match your gear ratio. What gear ratio do you have? I don't know if a 2 series posi carrier is available. 3 Series works with 3.08 to 3.90
  9. 200r4 have a bell housing pattern that fits Chevy, Buick, Olds, and Pontiac. The best ones come from the turbo Buicks. Good luck with that!
  10. Picked up my crankshaft, pistons, rods, rings and bearings after balancing. CP pistons were perfect out of the box. Rods needed a little help. Balance bob weight worked out to 2224 grams. Painted my block the body color.
  11. It should be a simple swap. It will bolt to the trans, you will need a externally balanced flexplate for a 454. Possibly a starter if yours has a small flexplate. Exhaust manifolds or headers. fan shroud for a bbc. How is your radiator? All the front mounts like you mentioned. that is off the top of my head, others can chime in. What year 454? Is it stock?
  12. How old is the starter? Take the back cover off and check the brushes.
  13. When you say it struggles to turn over, does it seem like it is tight on compression? It may be ignition timing.
  14. I have found that roller rockers have some noise. How long have you had your "break In" oil in it? If it sounded like just one rocker I might pull the covers and check. If the sound is light and scattered I think it would be the nature of the rocker. An exhaust leak will sound like a lifter ticking, it will usually go away under load.
  15. Nick, What are your goals? You are now talking pistons and possibly heads. What carb is on your setup? What gear and converter? 500 hp is a lot of snot for a N/A 383! Are you willing to accept some street drive ability issues? I love making horsepower but it does come at a cost!
  16. 10 to 1 with factory Iron heads, what fuel are you running? That cam duration, is it gross or at .050 lift? Do you know the part number of that piston?
  17. I have to agree with Sam. The hypers are a good piston for a normally aspirated build. They are quite and stronger than cast, but the strength comes with some brittleness. A lot of the time the rings are placed too high for spray. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
  18. Seems like a good size and the electric choke is a good thing. Looks cool with the anodized metering blocks and base plate, probably does not add to performance. I think it is a good choice.
  19. A double pumper is not the way to go on a mild cruiser. What cam, gear, and converter are you running? If you are dead set on a Holley check out a vacuum secondary carb. The eddy and carter carbs are a good choice for a cruiser.
  20. Most dual carb setups are more for the wow factor than performance.
  21. I am pretty sure that the 3 vent is for non vented gas cap. The 3 vent were used in 72. The tanks with a vented cap sometimes leave a trail of gas during launch. I run the 3 vent with 2 capped off and the other vents the tank. I am going to change to a 1/2 inch vent with a roll over valve when I sump the tank.

    700 r4

Looks like it was out in the rain for a while
  23. Sorry, All in, is a term for initial plus centrifugal advance. I run my timing at 38 degrees, There is 16 degrees of centrifugal advance in the distributor, plus 22 degrees initial at the timing mark, equals 38 degrees "all in"
