  1. I would bet the car has been repainted. Look for overspray or paint on some of the moldings that are hard to remove. OEM paint from the early 70's was not that good. Bruce
  2. Not only SS cars but all Monte Carlos had lower gloss blackout at the lower edge of the doors, the rockers from the sill plate down, the lower rear quarter section forward of the rear wheels and the lower fender section behind the front wheels. If you take a look at the lower body moldings they are two sections there is a gap between them everywhere but behind the rear wheels (one piece) and front of the front wheels (one piece) The body color will show at these gaps and not match the one piece sections mentioned above that have black out on them. On a black car you may not notice. Clear as mud isn't it! Bruce
  3. Nate, I don't know the exact gloss reading but it wasn't very high, more of a semi flat. On my 71 350 4bbl, I went super high gloss wet look black IMRON just because I like the way it looks. Bruce
  4. My 71 350 / THM350 had a one piece cable until I added cruise control, now I have two. Bruce
  5. Just to put one more thought out there, my 71 THM350 started to leak a bit after hitting 90,000+ miles, no big deal BUT! Pulled it at 114,000 for a reseal, still leaked pulled it and resealed again plus a new ft pump, still leaked. Pulled it again and found a crack in the converter weld, replaced it and no more leak. (Over a four year span) now at 148,000 it got a bit of a leak again plus the ft engine seal and rear main seal a bit also. (Cardboard on the floor) Bruce
  6. I have seen one 71 3 on the tree. Keep it!
  7. I know mine is a 350 but I believe they are the same. The larger one is tee'd into the PCV hose. The smaller one is tee'd into the vac. advance (ported spark) hose coming out of the carb. Bruce
  8. Alex, I also brought up an old message. Scan http://home.comcast.net/~stangeba/Protectoplate.jpg
  9. Alex, What you have taken the time to do is great, thanks! I found this web site for Mustangs and was wondering if anyone can program one up for our FGMC site. Don't know if it's possible but I think it would be a cool add on to the site (if it works). One for the body tag would be cool also. Bruce Mustang Decoder
  10. I didn't get the bill yet but I think it was $38.00 US. Here is what the main page looks like. http://home.comcast.net/~stangeba/Build_data_copy.jpg You also get a big pack of photocopied tech information. Bruce
  11. MarchieB, The sport wheel #2 was an option in 1971. I ordered it for my NON SS car (No Tilt on it then). My friend bought a new SS shortly after seeing my Monte and he did NOT have the sport wheel. I think more were found on the 1972 models than 71. They also offered the sport wheel on the Vega, Camaro and Chevelle. I don't know if they were excatly the same or not. I remember a kid in High School got a Vega GT the same time I got my Monte he referred to my sport wheel as a Vega GT wheel. Mine is badly worn (smooth) from 140,000 miles and 32 years but I'll keep it since it came with the car. Bruce
  12. 19MC70 Make sure the speedometer is working. Check all vacuum hoses, wires and the cable to the carb. The switch to shut it off on the brake peddle (I think it also is the brake light switch) could be bad as well as the vacuum release valve also on brake peddle. As mentioned in the above post, they do tend to fall apart inside. My spare part unit was one that did explode. Very sensitive spring inside like a speedometer along with a switch that prevents engagement below about 25 MPH. There is a small air filter on the unit and it could be missing or so dirty the air won't flow. My switch is on the turn sig lever and the small wires tend to break if you have a tilt wheel. I have seen some units that use a mercury switch that shuts off the unit if the car rolls over. If it's bent down, it won't work. Take it slow and good luck. Bruce
  13. Did rear speaker car's have the package tray with mesh in them were the speakers go?. My 71 had metal grills with built in studs. The underside of the speakers had cardboard insulated covers that were held on by one center clip. (If I remember correctly) The cardboard package tray itself was painted cardboard. I replaced mine with a newer (1980) style fuzzy carpet like tray a neighbor made at the Tech Ctr. It has holes in the cardboard but you don't need speaker grills because the carpet hides them. 14. I purchased a doner car with the gauge package. Ended up using all the wiring inside and out. Redline depends on the engine. Mine is yellow @ 4700 red @ 5000 with a 350 4BBL. Doner car had the same engine and no A/C like mine. I remember the other car used two temp sending units one in each head while mine only had one in the left head. Can't remember why. That was over 15 years ago. Bruce ------------------ Original Owner since May 14 1971
  15. Mine did NOT. I got them from a Pontiac dealer for a Tempest to keep junk out of the heater area. Bruce ------------------ Original Owner since May 14 1971
  16. Tried one Walmart and a Meijer along with some parts stores but will try a different Walmart. Good to know there out there so I will keep looking. Thanks, Bruce
  17. Used my wipers last weekend at the Woodward cruise for the first time in 12 years. The wipers didn't clear very well and places I have checked don't have the CORRECT refills to keep it original. Any tips? Bruce ------------------ Original Owner since May 14 1971
  18. My original ones were both clear as well as the replacements with amber bulbs. Bruce
  19. Someone posted a link for the GM Photo Store on-line last month. I returned several times and wrote them yesterday. I got an e-mail back today. Here it is: Good afternoon, Bruce! Thank you for your feedback on the GM PhotoStore website. We realize we haven't posted very many shots of the early 1970's Monte Carlos, at least not yet. When we launched the site, we chose about 1,000 of our most popular images, but we couldn't include very many shots of the same GM vehicle the first time around. We will be refreshing the site with new images each month, so please check the site for your Chevy engine and Monte Carlo images soon! Thanks again! Jennifer GM Media Archive http://www.gmphotostore.com Let's keep checking and report back if they post any new FGMC pics. Bruce ------------------ Original Owner since May 14 1971
  20. If anyone else has factory cruise control and it stops working, this may help. I added a used A/C Delco Cruise control unit to my Monte about 13 years ago. The guy said it was for a Monte and it does fit and work (most of the time). Over the past 13 years or so it stops working after 2 to 3 summers of driving usually first time out in the spring. What I have found is slight carbon deposits or dirt get inside the unit, it sticks and won't engage. I remove it, dissemble and clean it with Alcohol, (DO NOT LUBE) re-assemble and it works. 21. MONTEGUY, You have mail with a picture. It's all I have about floor shifters. Hope it helps. Bruce ------------------ Original Owner since May 14 1971
  22. What about the lower control arms "oval bushing = SB round = BB". Perhaps that's not a proven fact. Bruce
  23. 7" Rally style came with mine. Bruce ------------------ Original Owner since May 14 1971
  24. My friend bought one new in 71 and it only had one inlet to the air cleaner. He had A/C and the left snorkel would have hit the compressor. Don't know about an SS with out A/C but I doubt GM would have spent the extra money. Bruce ------------------ Original Owner since May 14 1971
