  1. The main adjustment that usually is the issue is on the transmission itself. Where the cable is mounted to the selector shaft. Again make sure it hasn't moved or the retaining clip on the cable hasn't fallen out . There is a similar set up on the console shifter itself. Usually not the issue but I have had a few that needed tightening. There is no ground cable on the console shifter as it is bolted directly to the floor. Which is grounded directly. The cable CAN be used by the car as a ground cable if you don't have enough or broken grounds. I also do not feel this is the issue you are having but Xtra insurance that is pennies on the dollar for safety on other electrical gremlins that can pop up due to bad grounds.
  2. From your description it sounds like the cable adjustment is off for some reason. Also very important, make sure you have grounds from the body to the frame, frame to engine and engine to frame. I call it the trifecta. If not, the car will use the cable as a ground and could stretch in best case but usually welds itself to the casing and not work at all. The "back drive" metal rod from the trans to the steering column collar also has an adjustment but from what you are saying, that adjustment is ok.
  3. Okee dokey, first make sure the car/trans is in park. Make sure the console shifter is in park also. Then go underneath the car and check the adjustment nut on the trans selector bracket. (Where the cable from the shifter attached to). Make sure it is tight. Then remove the 4 screws that hold the P R N D L L2 console cover off and check the adjustment nut, just like on the trans but on the shifter itself. While there also check the upper and lower cable mounting clips to make sure they are still retaining the cable. If it's only the speedo that is off, remove the lower dash panel under the column, locate the screw on the column for the little shift cable and adjust accordingly. I hope this helps.
  4. Thank you. But "Barn Find" is just that, a pole barn find near Johnsonville ny. She's a 71 402 car with a th400, 3.31 posi rear, power bench seat, power windows, power trunk, am/fm stereo, tilt wheel, a/c, rear defog, vanity mirror, gauge package, wide belt mouldings, bumper guards, p02 hubcaps and more I'm sure I'm forgetting. Lol. There is a thread on here, I believe its- Awake after 34 year slumber!. If you get a chance check it out. Lol The black 71 "Covid" Monte is just that. Something we slapped together with some of the "in stock" parts we had laying around during Covid. The Blue 71 SS was purchased as is in PA. Haven't had time to "finesse " her just yet.
  5. And the 71 has the roman numerals on it just like the 71 grille emblem. The 72 does not have the numerals on the grille or the trunk emblem. Sorry for the small pics, but zoom in on our 71 Barn Find, Silver one and Kevin's 71 Blue SS next to our 71 Covid Monte. You can see the trunk emblems.
  6. I personally purchased a 3.31 gear, Detroit trutrac, and bearing kit from quick performance. Check out their kits. The axles I went with are strange c-clip street/strip axles. The builder is a strange dealer and recommended quick performance. He builds 6sec race cars, chassis and the like. My little 12 bolt was a breath of ez pz as he said. Lolol
  7. It is pretty much normal being 1/2"ish more to the passenger side than driver's side. Just the way GM manufactured them. The spacer has nothing to do with that. All the spacer does is allow the thinner 3series gears get the correct depth and mesh when using a 2 series carrier.
  8. So, a 70 nose on a 71 with a 71 grille. 🤔 Original 3 on the tree converted to 4 on the floor. Depending on the price, not a deal breaker to me.
  9. I believe the rod you are looking for is made by the parts place or inline tube. I just recently saw them, as a pair on one of their sites.
  10. Hi John, it is a standard 10 AWG wire. For me, I have found the old factory fusible wire/link that the factory installed there is always a source of problems for its age in all of our 6 Monte Carlos.
  11. Looking good. Are they going to remove the sailpanel emblems or paint around them? 🤔 They just pop off... Carefully. Barrel clips hold them in.
  12. Gotcha. That makes sense. The Camaro air cleaner is made to fit a Holley carb and is dropped more than yours with a Qjet. Idk if you are running the Qjet but if not and you have a Holley on there you will have to make holes in the base for the float bowl adjusters to pass through the get the base lower besides bending the base itself.
  13. Don't understand why it doesn't fit. I have an RPM air gap, 1" open spacer, Holley carb and stock (for a big block 70 Camaro) air cleaner assy on Big Red with no interference. 🤔 Is it hitting an under hood brace? If so, can you "manipulate" it for the needed clearance?
  14. Yes manual valve body. Meaning you control the shifts. It no longer does it automatically. Including every time you come to a stop, you HAVE to start in low and work your way through the gears. If you start in 4th, 3rd or even 2nd you most likely will cook the clutches and make the trans useless. Pros and cons of our addiction. 😳
  15. I believe you can use the 4L80 without a computer BUT it needs to have a manual valve body. Not 100% sure on that. Th400 would be an ez swap out the th350 upgraded would work for a while depending on how you drive. As far as the "kickdown" cable the th350 will work without it being hooked up without danger of cooking the trans. BUT in order to "kick down" you would have to drop a gear, from drive to 2nd and go.
  16. Allen, try legendary interiors, CARS inc. the fabric is pricy but l feel it's worth it. I purchased my black cloth bucket seat covers, rear covers and foam from legendary. Great quality.
  17. Welcome Adam! Pics, pics, pics! Lolol. Don't hesitate and ask questions on your "old school" engine build. There are a lot of us that have the old relics still. 😂
  18. Very nice progress! Looking great! Keep the updates coming! Great work!
  19. No engine pics? Underbody pics? Looks to be a nice first gen. Not picking it apart but it has no sail panel emblems, 71 trunk lock bezel and 71 steering wheel. No deal breaker but be known pieces may be needed to make correct 70. If you purchase it and are so inclined.

Lol you are correct. Sorry, I missed that. 😳

Right above the oil filter is approx a 1" threaded hole with a plug. Just cut off on your first pic.
  22. Hi Dan. I also have a 71 402 4speed. Original configuration is classic copper, dark saddle interior, and white vinyl top. No build sheet found, Baltimore car. Engine, trans vins match car vin. Hope to get back onto its restoration this spring.
  23. 1970 Chevelle 350hp 396/402. Ez pz. Come on, give us something hard.
  24. There are no numbers like the vin on the engine and trans. There is a build date and axle codes. If assembled within 6 months prior to your cars build date, it is the correct rear for the car. There is a rear end decoder in the resource section.
