    Mystery SS

I think Chrome is correct for a console car. I had a very original bench seat 4 speed 70 malibu which had a black knob with the shift pattern on it in white.

    Mystery SS

Sam, I can't make out box #70 (steering column) on your sheet I have DB yours looks like it might be DE? it looks like we both have the same speedo cable code too. we both also have *M20 4 SPD TRANS Not *M20 4SPD MANUAL. I think this cars build sheet must be fake. its still a very cool car that sure would be fun to own

    Mystery SS

the build sheet makes me wonder!!! comparing it to my 70 BB 4 speed build sheet, I find the following; Steering column codes are not the same (mine is bucket, this one originally was bench) but column should be the same. speedo cable codes do not match, (but his code does match the code on a 70 A/T sheet I have) my 4 speed option is printed #M20 4 SPD TRANS compared to his #M20 4SPD MANUAL My box#28 for trans is WB4F compared to his CR and a few other inconsistancies....my box #103 "trans cooler lines" has -- -- his has nothing, different drive shaft codes too, etc. Oh well hate to be a nay-sayer, maybe the differences can be chalked off to the difference between an L.A. built 454 car and a Balt. built 402 car would love to be wrong though,
  7. I think the 5500 BB and 5000 SB theory stands true. Although I do know of another member with a 70 SS454 who has a 5000, and another with a 6500 in a 71. I just always chalked them off to " you don't stop a production line if you don't have the right part....you use the next available best thing" or just worker error on the assembly line. But your car and build sheet confirm that it occurred intentionaly unless the 938 in your build sheet block was also some sort of production error, that may have occurred for a period of time long enough result in more than a handful of BB's with 5000 redline tachs .....and keep us all guessing and speculating 38 years later BTW great looking car and truck you have there.
  8. just looked at a few build sheets I have here. 985 on my BB 4 speed car build sheet 5500. 938 on a 350 4 bbl a/t build sheet 5000.
  9. My 72 is code 68 midnight bronze which is pretty close to black out of the sun. It had and still has the black painted rockers. The car was built at the Baltimore plant, is it possible that certain plants overlooked painting the rockers on dark cars??

    SS 454 LS6

very cool, that will be a first!! More info please...options etc. Can't wait to see a copy...hope he comes through.
  11. Leo, I think that's probably the case too. Dave
  12. Both 71,and 72 have the larger hole. 70 has all small holes.
  13. Ed, I think standard ratio for 71 SS 454 was 3.31. Standard for 70 SS 454 2.56.
  14. Dan, I'd bet on Rochesters Holleys didn't have the spread bore, and it seems that the factory intakes of the period that were none spread bore were also square port. Which was part of the LS-6 and L-78 packages. Unless, someone has one of the "elusive" LS-6 Monte Carlos I'd say no factory holley on any Monte Carlo.
  15. Kevin, I wonder if this only occured at certain assembly plants? Or was left off in early/late production possibly. All the "unmolested" Montes I have owned/seen have the rockers painted black. My 72 "Midnight Bronze" had and still has it.(only body color darker than midnight bronze that I've seen is black). My parents owned the car since 1973, so its always been that way. Just some food for thought. Anyone else have any for comparison? ------------------ Dave C. 70 402 TH400 Monte Carlo 70 402 4spd Monte Carlo 71 SS 454 Monte Carlo 72 350 Monte Carlo 68 SS396 Camaro 86 Grand National 96 Impala SS

  17. Ed, In my experience, Yes to both questions. Although there are always exceptions, atleast to question 2!! ------------------ Dave C. 70 402 TH400 Monte Carlo 70 402 4spd Monte Carlo 71 SS 454 Monte Carlo 72 350 Monte Carlo 68 SS396 Camaro 86 Grand National 96 Impala SS

    71 ss valve covers

In my experience No, I think they were all painted orange, as well as all SS's had the black closed element air cleaner. for what its worth.

    intake manifold

Sorry Ed, I'm not interested in sharing any of the documentation with anyone Actually check the end of my first statement for the j/k....just kidding! Anyway, the LS-6 was available in 71 but only with the m-22 4 speed trans. I suspect had one actually been ordered that it would have come standard with the GM square port aluminum intake, just like an LS-6 Chevelle. Dave

    intake manifold

My 71 Monte SS454 LS-6 4 speed, documented with build sheet has an aluminum intake! j/k (probably the only way any Monte would have come factory with one) I did put the aluminum oval port intake from my 69 corvette onto my 70 monte. If its lower its not by much. The cast iron ones on the Montes were far from Hi-rise. ------------------ Dave C. 70 402 4spd Monte Carlo 71 SS 454 Monte Carlo 72 350 Monte Carlo 68 SS396 Camaro 86 Grand National 96 Impala SS

    Exhaust System

Yes, but they share the same "body tub" windshield, roof, back window, filler panel, and deck lid, are all the same parts. Not to mention floor boards and trunk floor. I'm pretty certain that the Engine is the same distance from the cowl, which leads me to believe that the exhaust would be the same. The extra length is all in front of the cowl. If there is a minimal diference it could probably be off-set with place ment of the chrome oval tips. let us know what you find out Steve. [This message has been edited by DaveC (edited 02-11-2003).]

    Exhaust System

Steve check www.ss396.com I'm positive they list them for the chevelles, and should be the same piece for the Monte. ------------------ Dave C. 70 402 4spd Monte Carlo 71 SS 454 Monte Carlo 72 350 Monte Carlo 69 427 Corvette roadster 86 Grand National 96 Impala SS
  23. 402 air cleaners had the same shape snorkle as the small block air cleaners. 454's had the wide opening at the end. ------------------ Dave C. 70 402 4spd Monte Carlo 71 SS 454 Monte Carlo 72 350 Monte Carlo 69 427 Corvette roadster 86 Grand National 96 Impala SS
