    Kind of Cool

Well, I had something kind of cool I thought I would share with the family here at fgmcc and you will see how it all fits together... While on Facebook some 8 months ago in the Monte Carlo forum while contributing to posts here and there on questions on our first gens, I met a guy named Rich Bartlett who reached out and asked all sorts of questions on wanting to get a monte carlo for himself and his future Daughter as they were expecting.... So Rich says he is looking for something special rather than a base model, so after a bunch of texting back and forth Rich says he wants one of the 1919 SS models for 1971. Well with a little Patience, one pops up about 3 hrs from his place and the questions come flooding in on what to look for and how to verify its one of the 1919 ss cars. Rich send me tons of pictures and while waiting Patiently for the owner who took forever to reply to him, Rich decides to pull the trigger on this 71ss based off what I could tell him on it. He gets the car shipped sight unseen and its exactly what he wanted and IS a true 71ss car that has seen some better days but not bad at all considering its age. Everything is there and not missing a thing, he has started taring it apart and working on it for himself and his unborn Daughter. Fast forward and Kind of cool Rich contacted me today and even posted pictures on Facebook that his Daughter was born TODAY........... So That means she was born on 1-9-19 and her name is of course ....Patience Tell me thats not Kind of Cool and this Monte Carlo was meant to be. I am still pressing Rich to join us here at fgmcc and hope he will..... Darren.
  5. Ok, here is my spin on this and is only speculation as I have seen back in the day when we had Brand new cars come in to the dealer to sell. That they had to get bodywork repairs even before they were sold new due to transport damage or Factory errors.... My guess is that when the car was finished and shipped to Dealer that upon arrival they noticed that the trunk lid when closed the left side Trunk lid arm bulged up on the deck lid filler panel slightly. But was easily seen on a brand new car, so off to the Dealership Bodyshop where they removed the filler panel after noticing the Trunk lid arm bracket was welded too high on one side. Off comes the filler panel and a lack of attention to quality repair was done as time was money..... they rip a tin hole on the panel and cut the welds and with the trunk lid closed the slip through that ripped opening a pair of Vice grips or tin grips positioning the arm in place under tension where it sits lower and tack weld it and leave the butcher job and install new filler panel and off to paint and sell or deliver to customer none the wiser as Bulge is now gone and looks as good as new as its technically still new..... Thats my 2 cents as I seen back in my GM days the bodyshops do some weird repairs on brand new cars, even the the grand nationals I witnessed brand new but already getting leaky T roof repairs and then sold as new still....... Darren
  6. Hi Ert, yes the Housing was changed on the rear as it was in a 1959 Impala before and he had a speedo in that. The previous owner said it was hooked up and didnt use a dash switch but worked great. how it was hooked up he doesnt know but thinks it had to do with the brakes ? doing lots of searching on this to make sure its done right. Thanks Guys for the input Darren
  7. Ok Guys, time to help the simpleton out here.... I have seen plenty of 700r4's with the ability to thread in a switch into a port on the passenger side of the tranny and running the wire over the housing and connect to the 4 pin plug on the drivers side for the lock up. The Tranny I have is a 1992 700r4 and has NO port on the passenger side at all. I am assuming because it is a newer 700r4 this is different ? it has the threaded speedo cable gear already which is lucky for me and also the 4 pin plug is on the driver side with enough wires for pigtales. my question I guess is How do I hook up this lock up or is this newer 700r4 with a 4th gear different. I would prefer not to have a switch I have to keep turning on and off. I have heard there is a way to hook it up to your brake pedal and it does it all for you with no switch ? PS my car does not have AC or Cruise.. I plan on installing this in the monte for better gas milage over long distances. Thanks Darren
  8. Did mine in a POR 15 grey as well as the swaybar so it was offset from everything else being Black. But as Steve mentioned they were just a bare metal color.. It is more like Slate Grey though now. Darren
  9. Ok Guys, here are some questions for you as I Bought my Canadian built 71ss from the previous owner who owned it since new well almost as the original Lady owner only had it 4 months... Anyhow I have spoken with Ken and he said he never made these changes and figured I would ask for a general consensus...... Yes there are some differences between Canadian built cars and the US ones in subtle ways like the cruise control on ss cars and also Dual sport mirrors and so on... 1....In my 71ss it has the Large Tongue and Large Buckle for Both the Should belt and waist belt that are singles as the joint belts didnt start till 72. Some have pointed out that its wrong in 71 as they used the wide for shoulder and small tongue and buckle for the waist belt.....(Deluxe Belts)... What says you guys on this........ 2... My 71ss has the perforated headliner rather than the basket weave style which is correct and I also have the perforated Sun visors as well but mine are still joined at the rear view mirror... I actually prefer that style but do even notice myself that most 71's have the swing ones that Dont join at the mirror. yes some of the early 71's had the mirror attached ones using old stock in very early models but mine is a later model 71 built at the same time as Larrys and Bruces and am sure they have the small visors.... I dont know if it makes a difference but my passenger side visor has a vanity mirror on it.. Once again what says you guys on this........ thats my questions guys. Darren
  10. For me I have to stick with the 1971 Monte Carlo SS for first choice. After owing a 1970 402 4 spd car it was great but it does have some disadvantages, for instance that BB in our western meet cruises was great on the highway but uphills and down hills became troublesome and then up an incline on a stop with others behind you is more grief than it was worth (For Me) as to not roll back on start up. There are other reasons but it was 50 /50 for me. Now that I have the 71ss automatic no issues at all. Darren
  11. Thats Awesome Kev, I am number 71 going on the 71ss hahaha Darren

    Up she goes

I may pull the tranny and being at this height it will work out better than on the floor in the space I have. Plus the exhaust needs some adjustments and will also be easier too. Darren

    Up she goes

Well with a massive change in the weather up here and we have had snow on an off for over a week that luckily didnt stick around but temps as high as 5 degrees it was time to put her up for the winter on ramps that is. I have a real good Arborist Friend and one of our members was Super cool enough to help me obtain some height for the monte, this way I can keep her just as clean underneath as she is on top. But thinking she may not need much cleaning, I had her out about a dozen times this year and thats it..... figured I would share some pics... Darren

    71 SS

Hi Joe, I bought my combo and bolted it on my alternator 2 years ago from Ebay. Of course when I look back it only shows feedback on items I bought but doesnt shows the item itself, so I cant find the original listing or sellers name. But here is a link to some for sale on Ebay but dont seem to see one's with the Anodized Fan as well. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=chevelle+deep+v+belt+alternator+pulley+and+fan&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_osacat=0&_odkw=chevelle+alternator+pulley+and+fan&LH_TitleDesc=0 Darren

    71 SS

Hey Joe, looks Awesome !! Could I suggest 1 item off Ebay that I bought, it spruced up the Alternator real nice Pulley and fan... Darren
  16. I also agree with Dave as well, that is a Replacement Tag. Key word is Replacement, if It said Reassigned then that would hurt the value as the argument arrises that the build sheet could be from any other 71ss as a Reassigned number will look nothing like the original, But a Replacement displays the original VIN still. I also agree with Leo on obtaining what would or could be considered an original Tag from that company and spend the $20 for the correct rivets off ebay and then reattach the new one in its proper place. just my thoughts.... small world

Hey Sam, I have met Aaron's Dad in person and Awesome sums it up quite well. With our Western Meet every 2nd year it seems in Penticton Aaron's Dad always shows up and fits right in even though he doesnt drive a First Gen Monte hahaha. He has had some Vettes though and had or still has his Special Edition 03 ? Monte.... Yes been watching and following your Facebook Journey with the C5 looks Great Bones....... Darren
  18. Sad to hear Burt Reynolds passed away today............. He did soooo many movies but always remembered as The Bandit.... Rest in Peace Burt.
  19. Willie, to start with did you get the right harness for your year ? a 1970 harness will not work in a 1972 and also the wiring diagram for a 1970 wont work for a 1972. There are obviously some same wires and colors but late 71 and 72's didnt have the same horn replay or Volt regulator as a 1970. Also a 72 AC harness is different than a Non AC harness. Long Orange wire is usually for the left side of the engine compartment not the right side if you are standing in front of the car looking down. Solid orange is for Blower fan/Heater. let us know..... Darren
  20. Booked at the Rosedale already. June 19th arrive - check out the 24th. Too early to book the car show it says. Darren
  21. Top picture is a picture of the parts brand new and the lower one is the one on my 1971 454. The battleship part is metal and the flex tube resembles cardboard on the outside that is corrugated but is like a tin foil on the inside. hope that helps Darren
  22. I do remember that Bruce, Sadly in some ways that promoted people to not wear seatbelts instead of wearing them.... How you ask...... people that owned a 1974 vehicle automatically did up all the belts whilst not in the car and then just simply hopped in the car next time and drove without touching the belts as they were already buckled and just drove with no headache as the safety was bypassed. Darren
  23. Hey Caulder, You can leave your speedo in and use all the linkage from the column shift column BUT it wont work for your 700R4 tranny. You will need to get a floor shift steering column, thats not on your list. You can hook up the linkage and still tie in the line cable to the PRNDL1 from the collar on the column, but the Shiftworks Plate that goes on the console will shift differently from that of the indicator on the speedo. The gear select is set up for 350/400 tranny shifting and will match up but not with a 700r4. I hope the carpet you ordered was for a Buckets car with console..... the benchseat carpet is different and covers less. I bought everthing for a 72 monte I had from The Parts Place Inc as it was all in stock and shipped at once. I have had grief after grief from OPGI with Back order after back order. they don't say there stuff is in or out of stock and when you order it and pay for it is when it then shows up as out of stock. frustrating as no refund just waiting and waiting for the parts to finally fill and then more shipping charges incurred. I called Parts place inc and they verified everything in stock and took the time to take my order and it all cam up to Canada super quick. Darren

    Extra Wire

Yep your right Doug....... The passenger side has a single barrel type plug that goes right dab in the middle of the door pin and is white in color. The drivers side is always 2 pin, one side white and one side black. My guess which does happen is the spade for the black wire to slide on has broken off and when it does, it breaks off on such a thin peg it doesnt even look like there was one to begin with. You can get a used one off any chevelle, olds, buick or monte from the drivers side. That Black wire completes the loop for the dome light and will make it work. Darren.

    Extra Wire

Hey Dave, Dan is right. That should be for your door pin switch. You can disconnect your battery and then grab a 7-16th deep socket and loosen off your door pin in the jamb on the drivers door. That’s where the white and black wires connect. Not aftermarket related. Darren
