Ben N
Is there such a thing as GOOD chrome paint? I'd like to re-paint my dashboard face around the edges, where that chrome painted plastic edge is (it's about 1/4"). I picked up some Bare Metal Foil (chrome finish), from a local hobby shop, but I'm not sure that is the best way to go. Any advise? Thank You, Ben
Rob Peters
Ben, I think it is going to be a trial and error process. You may want to buy several different types and finishes and test them before you decide what looks nearest to what you are looking for. Are you talking about the same finish as is on the steering wheel on some of the First Gens? If so, I would try a silver or aluminum color. The area I need to re-do, is the outer rim (or edge) of the woodgrain looking dash panel. It's about a 1/4" section/border that goes almost all the way around the dash panel. I think that section was supposed to be shiny. But on a 31 year old car, I guess some of the finish/paint wore off. What I'm looking for is something to re-do it with. I'm trying to re-do it without taking the dash apart. Thanks Again, Ben ------------------Remember: Your car isn't LOUD enough, until it rattles the china in your neighbors' china cabinets!!! wallaby
What kind of metal stuff did you get at the hobby shop? There is MONOKOTE, and it is like a mylar material that has an adhesive on the back, and heat-shrinks to fit curved surfaces. Monokote comes in many colors and finishes, including aluminum and chrome. The product is normaly used to cover model airplanes. I have not tried it, but have given the idea some thought. There should be books at the hobby store that will instruct you how the process works, maybe you can look at the book and decide if it's worth a try. As far as a low-budget method, try stainless-steel duct tape. It can be cut in strips, and a pencil eraser works good to press it around curves. You will end up with seams, but careful trimming would render them nearly unnoticeable. The stainless duct tape also works good on the inside of tail light and parking light assys. where the factory silvering has turned dark.
Ian
Ben, I did mine with a silver paint pen from the craft store. I have a good picture I can email you if you want. I would post it but my ISP does not let me link to pictures on my web site. Ben N
Thank You All For Your responses. Wallaby: The stuff I bought is called Bare-Metal with an Ultra Bright Chrome finish. It's a foil material with adhesive backing. Ian: Yes, please e-mail me a photo. It sounds like the same type of pen I used to get Reggie Jackson's autograph on a black baseball bat that I had custom made with all of his stats. What is the name of the pen you used??? Ian
Ben, I am out of town til Friday, and the pic is on my home computer, but I will send you a pic when I get back. I will ask my wife what kind it was. I got the idea from on of the mags. They redid the dash in their Monte so I figured I could do it as well. PDQ 70
I used 2 silver paint pens that I picked up at Walmart. One was a Testors silver paint marker and the other was a fine line silver paint pen that I found in the craft/hobby section. The job was a piece of cake and it looks great! ------------------ Frank Z. 1970 Monte Carlo Project 1970 El Camino SS 396 project http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/70Elky396/PDQ70frontrh.jpg http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/70Elky396/PDQ70n2.jpg http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/70Elky396/70Elkyfrontpass.jpg http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/70Elky396/SSElky2.jpg http://www.geocities.com/my1970ss/
Dans '70 Z20
Not a cheap alternative.....but they are chroming plastic now. What they do is chrome the whole dash and then you mask it and paint the black back....Little costly but comes out well. Just for your info.
