Bumper guard mounting

Dan, you didn't specify if you are replacing the front or rear bumper.  I assume it is the rear bumper (which has no holes for guards) because even reproduction front bumpers come with the lower guard hole in the bottom lip.

I installed a set of NOS rear bumper guards on my '70 SS and they came in a box with a template and locating instructions for drilling two holes for each guard.  I made  a photo journal of that project if you are interested - you can find it at this LINK.

If you are replacing the front bumper, you already have the bottom hole located in the bumper and you just have to locate the upper hole.  I installed a complete set of rechromed original guards on my other '70.  I didn't make a photo journal of that project but I took lots of photos so I have attached several as thumbnails below.  It is easy to make a cardboard template to locate the upper hole vertically and use a level or square to locate the hole horizontally.  I recently replaced my front bumper with a reproduction bumper and used the same procedure again with good success.  Good luck.

got the chills looking at the drill on that beautiful shiny bumper

Actually, that photo was when I drilled my old bumper which has since been replaced.  It took more courage to center punch and drill the hole in the brand new bumper but the end result was worth it ... love the look of bumper guards on first gen Montes!
