  1. Yes, in 1970 they marketed the 400 small block and the 402 as 400's. One was referred to as 400 2 bbl and the other as 400 4 bbl. Because the 400 small block was a 1970 only option, I'm not sure how they marketed the 402 in 71 & 72. If you can get a copy of the sales brochure you could figure it out.
  2. There is a link at "Great source of information" #315585 - 04-24-2011 06:58 PM here in the restoration forum. You can look up a lot of information in these AMA documents. On page 3 of the 1970 booklet, they list all the small blocks as "Turbo Fire" and all the big blocks as "Turbo Jet". It details all the options and what equipment came with what, such as all 3 speed manual transmissions had the shifter on the column. Great stuff.
  3. I was looking at your sticker, isn't the big block 400 a "Turbo Jet" and the small block 400 a "Turbo Fire"? I may be wrong.

    454 question

Dan, The AMA booklet for 1970 Monte lists CRN as a Optional Engine, 3 speed 4bbl Carb. We know that a 3 speed manual was only available with the 350 2-bbl and that 454 required an Automatic. They must have left the "Auto" part off of the description. They also list CRQ as a valid 1970 454 code with Automatic.

    454 question

According to the 1972 AMA data that Chevrolet provided, on page 3 of the General section, it lists the engine code for a 1972 270 HP 454 as "CPD" There is no "CRW" engine code listed for a 1972 Monte according to the AMA Booklet. There is a link to all 3 year booklets posted under the Restorers Forum from 04/25/11. These really should have a sticky at the top of the Restorer Forum, they are chock full of answers to common questions. There is a Camaro site with engine codes that does list a CRW but I would trust the data that Chevy provided. It would be interesting to see build sheets from 72 454 cars to see how they are coded.

    454 question

Gotta throw my 2 cents here. Highly unlikely that the factory would have "accidently" installed an LS-6 in place of an LS-5. LS-6 had different fuel lines etc from an LS-5. When you look at all the different assembly line groups that would have been affected by it, it seems unlikely that several inspectors would overlook such a mistake. A single item could make it, like a steering wheel but too many auxillary parts are not the same.Granted freak things DID happen but a mistake engine or trans is highly unlikely. In the 40 years that the cars have been around, to date, not 1 verified LS-6 has been found. There have been many "my next door neighbor's plumbers brother had one" but ZERO real documented ones. Just my opinion, I could be wrong.
  7. I started mine up last week for the first time this year. Took it out of the garage today, washed it and took it on a 30 mile cruise. I stopped at Dairy Queen on the way home to get a Blizzard for the wife and put the car back in the garage. Got lots of looks and thumbs up's.
  8. I have BlackJack AK5000's on mine. Don't remember if BlackJack is a sub brand of one of the bigger guys or if it was it's own brand. I put them on in about 1983 or so. The AK is for Aluminum Kote. They fit perfectly. Don't interfere with clutch linkage or the brake valve on the frame.
  9. To use the TH400 you also need the electric kickdown switch and harness that mounts to the accelerator pedal. The TH350 uses a cable kickdown.
  10. Monte 3 speed was column shift only, could be ordered with bucket seats, could NOT be ordered with a console. Can't say about Chevelle or Elky but the 1970 Monte paper work is specifc about the 3 speed.
  11. Yes and Yes. The 4 speed could be ordered with a bench set, buckets without console or buckets with console. If you ordered buckets seats and did not order the console, the shifter (automatic) was on the column. I believe that is how Capri's 1971 SS454 car was ordered.
  12. to Luke_501: In case you didn't know, they make a wrench called a "line" wrench. It is like a box wrench with one flat missing so you get 5 sides on a nut instead of 2 with a regular open end wrench. They are perfect for brake lines. Sometimes you just can't save a line, but a line wrench is your best shot. Sears and many others sell them.
  13. The Parts Place carries complete stock systems. They don't specify which muffler they use but you can always call & ask. $279.000 for the system but doesn't include hangars.

    Pet Peeve

My pet peeve: for sale adds that start with "What we have here is..." No, "WE" don't have anything "YOU" do. Just say "For sale, 1970 Blah Blah Blah!" I'm off my soap box now!
  15. Floor pans are the same. Monte and Chevelle use the same driveshaft (application to application IE BB 4spd to BB 4spd or 350 & th350 to 350 & th350). Monte automatics use a rubber cushion with the crossmember ends but a solid mount Chevelle will fit and work. I'm thinking that the Hurst guy is guessing that the cars are way different, they aren't in this area. That's why we can use stock Chevelle exhaust.
  16. Sam, I should have worded it that way. When you buy from hurst you order the shifter body and handle based on application. The shifter based on tranny and handle based on your interior.
  17. Console or no console makes a difference as well.
  18. 10 bolts were standard in 350 2 barrel cars. Your gears have been changed out because 3.36:1 was the highest numerical ratio available from the factory in a 10 bolt in the Monte. 3.31:1 was the highest numerical ratio available in the 12 bolt in a Monte. You might check the codes on the axle tube to make sure it is a factory Monte rear and not a replacement out of a Chevelle.
  19. Covert was the color, a tanish off white color. There was only one "style" of vinyl top for 72, it was a full vinyl top. The last numbers on the tag are internal plant codes (scheduling etc)that are meaningless about the car.
  20. They are lifesavers. I have the Chassis Service Manual, Chassis Overhaul Manual, Fisher Body Manual, Factory Assembly Manual and the 1965-1972 Chevrolet Parts Book and the 1970 restoration packet. Nothing like the factory data to answer questions!
  21. The hump is also different for a 4 speed without a console. That hump is very "square" as opposed to the rectangular hole with a console.
  22. Like Bruce said, the large plastic buckles were standard and deluxe (small stainless buckles) could be ordered with any interior.
  23. Old Air Products list different part #'s for Chevelle: 95-0423 AC Hose Assembly Hose Assembly, Chevrolet, Chevelle, w/ Muffler, 69-71 *w/ Big Block V-8 $145.00 95-0424 AC Hose Hose, Liquid Line, Chevrolet, Chevelle, 70-72 *w/ V-8 Monte is listed as P.N. 95-0431 so I would suspect it is a correct part # and not the Chevelle one.
  24. Terry, Old Air Products manufactures the correct Monte Big block hoses. 1970 Monte Carlo 95-0431 AC Hose Assembly Hose Assembly *w/ Big Block V-8 $145.00 http://www.oldairproducts.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=400_406_4061970
  25. The Parts Place INC sells the backdrive assembly that controls the locking function of the steering wheel. Highly recomend it as opposed to wiring up the shifter bowl. This will let the car function as GM designed it. Info from their website below: ST9836M (1970 - 1972 Monte Carlo) SWIVEL & ROD ASSEMBLY - THIS IS THE LINKAGE THAT GOES FROM THE STEERING COLUMN ARM ON THE BOTTOM OF THE STEERING COLUMN IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THE SIDE ROD ATTACHES TO THE ARM THAT ATTACHES TO THE SHAFT ASSEMBLY THAT PIVOTS ON FRAME. THE PARTS INCLUDED WITH THIS KIT ARE: ROD, SWIVEL ADJUSTMENT WITH NUT. THE ONLY WAY THE STEERING COLUMN LOCKS THE TRANSMISSION AND ALLOWS THE REVERSE LIGHTS TO FUNCTION. IT IS USED FOR CARS WITH FLOOR SHIFT AUTOMATIC OR MANUAL, OR COLUMN SHIFT AUTOMATIC. $89.00
