I am no expert, but I believe only the 70 model year has the v notch. 71 lowers had the bigger cut out, the same as the top on the 71 SS. I have two 71 that have never been restored nor painted, one with 29,000 original miles. They both have the bigger cut out on the bottom trim piece.

I agree with most, keep the original color. Now that I said that I must admit that I did a complete color change on an all numbers matching rust free 1971 SS. Now I confused myself, lol
