  1. You’re messing up my FGMCC site muscle memory. Thanks for nuthin’.

  3. Ok, here’s the straight dope per “Chevrolet By the Numbers 1970-75”. I was ‘kinda’ right based on sketchy memory… I haven’t picked this book up in a while. Here’s the gist of the VIN assignments:
  4. Negative. Don’t quote me until I can confirm via available resources, but if I remember reading correctly, each year/assembly plant was/were designated numbers which to assign as VIN numbers. For example, for 1970, Kansas City Leeds got 138570K (000001 - 100000), Van Nuys got 138570L (100001 - 199999), etc. Again, I’m completely guessing on numbers per assembly location, but I’m sure I’ve read where VIN’s were assigned to each plant. I’ll check later today. Pretty sure I can picture this info in “Chevy By The Numbers” if anyone cares to beat me too the punch.
  5. Rob, It is definitely the entire string of characters. Hence the increase from 13 to 17 total characters over the years… there have been just too many vehicles produced over several decades. And with the reliability of modern day vehicles being what they are, I wouldn’t be surprised if VINs increase to 19 digits at some point in the near future. Simply put, the last 6 digits of your Monte’s VIN likely exists on several other vehicles from several different manufacturers from several different years. It’s the preceding characters which delineate make, model and manufacturer.
  6. I just realized that I already have the one for my ‘70 printed and in a binder. Gonna do the same for the ‘71.

    Hello

Welcome! Keep at it and keep the pictures coming.
  8. That was 20 minutes of my life that I’ll never get back. If dude filming/narrating got any more excited, a funeral would’ve broke out 🙄. Is it wrong that I was hoping for a swarm of wasps to overpower him with anaphylactic shock?
  9. Oops. I meant JOE was correct.
  10. Rob is correct. The number in the box to the left of the VIN box is the body number which appears (without the ‘BK’) on the trim tag. It’s just a bad picture of the build sheet cutting off those particular numbers in the VIN. I found the first link with this car on the other website and the VIN number is 600085. This is confirmed through the picture of the title the dude sent me. All appears legit, observe…
  11. My 2 cents. Spend extra once and get it done right.
  12. What’s funny is I said “this is the last one I need to get to round out the collection” as I opened it. Needless to say, the wife just rolled her eyes.
  13. The kiddo got me a shirt! I had her hold it up so I didn’t have to put the good folks visiting the FGMCC site thru the pain of seeing my ugly mug 🤣😂
  14. Congrats Bryan! Glad to hear you dropped the hammer and got the deal done. I’m far from the most knowledgeable on these boards, but what I lack in technical and mechanical contributions I make up for in quick wit, unparalleled charm and rugged good looks (Dennis and Joe will co-sign on this statement). Oh, hey… did I mention that I also own a ‘70 SS? All effin’ around aside, it certainly appears you did well and picked up a very nice, clean, solid and pretty complete car. We look forward to hearing and seeing more of it after you get her settled in.
  15. Welcome! Love the Lime Green Poly…
  16. Must’ve missed that… running on little sleep lately. Sounds good, looking forward to seeing what he shows you. And adding to Dennis’s numbers suggestion. See if the seller will accommodate sliding the alternator over to see if she bears the “CRN” and partial VIN stamp on the pad on the head to corroborate the claim of “original engine”. Hopefully the block wasn’t decked removing these identifiers when rebuilt in ‘81.
  17. Bryan, My 2 cents… Seller says the only part of the interior that’s been replaced is the package tray. This would suggest it was likely water damaged/warped at some point. Luckily it appears the original speaker grills made the transition to the new tray. Additional possible clues to support this theory: • judging by the seams under rear window not lining up with deck lid gaps, the vinyl top has likely been replaced. Which usually means rust remediation around the back glass has been performed • minor rust issues in the trunk support the leaky back glass theory Which means the suggestion by Keith and Alex makes sense to see how the frame, chassis and other things underneath look. While sleuthing around under the car (ideally the seller can arrange a lift for such viewing) check for those all too important numbers of which Dennis speaks. Good luck and keep us posted.
  18. If you put the 2 x 4 that smacked Dennis in the melon in that, will it make toothpicks? Asking for a friend.
  19. Long overdue for new shoes. Likely flat spotted, even if you over-inflate for winter storage. 20 years is WWAAYYYYY to old.
  20. I want one of those Crazy Eddie prints. Where can I find one? A good-sized one that I can frame would be ideal.
  21. Was wondering where you’ve been. Looks great dude. Like Dennis and Tom said, make some time to drive and enjoy her.
  22. Reminds of the time me and my best HS bud Jimmy done come across an abandoned Yamaha 250 when we was out plinking rabbits and birds on the BN tracks just down the road a piece from the Waffle House. We wasn’t sure if the old girl belonged to anybody so we took her home piece by piece over a months time til we had it all and no one knew she was even missing. Jimmys uncle Bubba was fresh out of the joint after doing a 3 piece for larceny and learned how to fix dirt bikes, cut hair and tattoo while “on vacation” 😉. He had that bad Oscar purring like Granny’s kitty at bingo night at the VFW before you could say incest. Me and Jimmy took turns taking that Yamaha home on weekends until he got hooked on the booger sugar and traded her for an 8 ball. It sucked going back to my old Schwinn Swinger, but it was better than walking everywhere wearing handy me down bell bottoms donated by a local homeless shelter. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.
