john green
Have 72 Big Block Monte Carlo. Recently installed new SS tank & fuel pump as well as rebuilt front end. Now when driving on any incline car seems to run out of fuel. Idles fine on level ground, what gives ? Tank came from OPGI. Thanks
jft69z
Welcome to the forum John. Does the car have EFI or carb? Engine mounted mechanical fuel pump, or electric in the fuel tank? Does it do it when the tank is full, half, quarter tank, all the time, etc,? Answers to these questions will change the troubleshooting path in different directions.
Dtret
How did it run before you installed the new tank?
Rob Peters
It sounds like you are having this issue when the tank is not full because you indicate it happens on an incline but you didn't say if the car is facing up hill or down hill on that incline. The questions Joe asked are spot on as far as people trying to assist with your issue. It sounds like the new gas tank, when you installed it the fuel pick up line/fuel level assembly may not be sitting low enough into the tank or something is restricting it. Something else to consider is on the stock 4 barrel quadrajet carb has a filter in where the fuel line attaches to the carb and I have seen this get clogged so if you had done work on the fuel delivery system it may have kicked up some debris that has clogged that filter. rob

jft69z
Still makes a major difference if the car has EFI or not. EFI won't really tolerate a tank without internal baffling (or some type of slosh control), especially in turns, or low fuel level. A carb has a float bowl with a mini-reservoir to help bridge the gap when the pickup tube is sucking air. That's why it's important John to see how your car is equipped, to figure out your problem.
