Crom Cruach
I have 2.73 gears on my TH 350 trans 350 SBC ‘72, just confirming that it’s a 10 bolt 8.2 based on the photo below of the diff cover, is this right? (Sorry about rubbish photo). Based on that, would the strange 3.55 be too extreme a change? Looking for a nice torquey feel but will drive the occasional motorway and needs to be a little bit practical! https://www.opgi.com/drivetrain/differential-rear-end-components/rear-end-gear-assemblies/gearset-us-82355-c220043.html
Leghome
I avoid OPGI if at all possible I hav ehad problems in the past with stuff being out of stock after I place my order. On somthing like this I would use a manufacturer or reputible dealer
Dtret
I agree with Larry. If I think shipping costs with them are crazy state to state, I can only imagine what it would cost to ship to Ireland.
Crom Cruach
Really just using their site to whittle down part choice. I’ll find a supplier in Germany or the UK, or just suck up the shipping lol
DragCat
I too check OPGI sometimes for part numbers. But wouldn't recommend when your looking for performance enhancements. Strange has a international dealer locater on their website, link below. I can't answer your motorway question with new gears, I have 355's in my 70 but that's a whole different story. One thing I would recommend, if your doing new gears replace the axels also. Along with me there are a few members that have gone with Strange axels. And now we get into what is lovingly called the snowball affect lol. I don't know enough about what I'm about to say, I'm sure others will chime in with more knowledge, I'll just tell you my experience, my 70 had a 12 bolt posi with the 2.73 gears. My buddy had a "in stock" 355 ring and pinion that he gave to me. When we went to do the upgrade my stock posi was a series 2 unit, his gears were for a series 3 unit. Luckily he also had "in stock" a series 3 unit. Just saying, make sure you know what you have and prepare for the possible additional parts and pieces you may end up having to need. https://www.strangeengineering.net/contact-us-international/
Crom Cruach
Here are some better photos, looks like 12 bolts to me after all. I can't make out the number near the left axle. do I need to open her up and get part numbers / count cog teeth? Is there any way to get details from the protect-o-plate? Dtret
Passenger side axle tube, front side, about 1/3 of the tube away from the pumpkin there should be numbers stamped in the tube. Not easy to see or find so don’t use a grinder. That will tell you what was in the rear from the factory.
MC1of80
Yup, she's a 12 bolt! Congratulations!!!
Scott S.
Yes, that looks like a 12 bolt.... As for changing up the gears, anything higher than 2.73 will require a "type 3" carrier as well as the ring and pinion gear. 3.55 will give you a nice "around town" feel, and not too painful on the open road. (probably around 3200-3500 rpm's at 100 km/h) Here's a photo of a 3.31 non positraction gearset.... 43/13. The last 4 numbers give you the ratio.
DragCat
And just mentioning it, if your going to change to a type 3 ( I think there is also a type 4) your probably gonna need shims
Scott S.
Yeah, a "type 4" is for those who love the smell of burning rubber.... Pretty much everything 3.9 and higher.
