Ian
I was looking at some pictures of Mickeys 4 speed conversion and noticed he said he had to mount the crossmember a different way.. My new exhaust is pretty close to the crossmember, do you think I could do this with my TH400 (soon to be 700R4) I have not looked at mine yet to see what way it is pointing, but I think it is the other way... Mikstudie
I think you have to do that so the mount will line up,I'am going to look at mine tonight and will let you know. I think I remember having to do that also.
Sam (Bones)
??? my 4 speed car wasn't like that, PM Leo Ian, ask Tim since he's already done the swap to a 700R4
monte70car
i never turned my going from a 350th to a 400th or from a 400th to the 700r4. all i did was slide the cross member forward and back.
Ian
I was just looking at it for the clearance issue with my pipes.. I will take a picture later and post it...
Ian
Thanks Allan, but for $239 I'll live with mine it is not that bad.

680HPStroker
If you you are not able to spring for a aftermarket cross member. You could do what I did and just cut a stress relief in it, bend it where you need it to be, weld it back up, grind the weld smooth, paint and presto a custom cross member of your own. Soon I'll be getting one of the custom ones from P.A.T.C.
Ian
I think the issue is that I may have it in backwards. In the picture above the mount is to the rear of the car, I looked under mine this morning, and the mount is facing the front of the car. I'll take a picture this weekend. kc8oye
Ian.. the factory crossmember fits in the correct orientation errm.. well.. now that I say that.. I have an Impala crossmember, not a monte carlo... that way mine bolts directly to the frame w/o the rubber cushions.. however because the imapala had the X-frame, the 'arches' in the crossmember are very close to the center of the car.. I just had the exhaust shop run the exhaust so that it fit my pipes sit just a 1/2" away from my driveshaft loop...
wallaby
Mine is also installed with the trans mount forward. I didn't realize it could be done the other way. With the main bar under the tail housing of the trans instead of having it forward near the pan, I'd expect it would be a lot easier to service the trans or remove the engine if you had to. Ian
OK took some pictures, mine is facing the front right now. Would it hurt to turn it the other way for clearance? The exhaust is the MagnaFlow with a X pipe crossover.
kc8oye
your clearance looks good?
Ian
It is on the inside like yours Allan. I am thinking if I turn it around the humps will line up better with the pipes...
monte70car
here is my crossmember that is 2.5" h-pipe i could only get one picture.
Ian
Rob which way is yours facing toward the front or the rear?
monte70car
i believe the mount is facing the front ian i would have to double check. i can post a picture of the elkie frame if that helps. it was set up for a 350th
kc8oye
I have only 3" collectors... but because I use the impala x-member, my pipes have some really intersting bends up front
Grease
Ian I dont think with the automatic it can be turned backwards like it is shown with the 4speed . The pipe would be into the oil pan I believe.
kc8oye
i know it won't fit with a 700r4 like that.. at least mine wouldn't. my trans mount barely clears!
