  1. There were 3 styles of air cleaners. Small block 2 and 4 barrels had a small round snut. 402's had a larger more oval snout and 454's had a wide oval snout. There are some photos in the galleries.

    Engine build code

Wouldn't he be looking for a Sept to Dec 1970 casting? The 71 model cars were introduced in Fall 70. A December 1971 car should be a 1972 model car. My 1970 Monte was built in Dec 1969. I agree it should be the 3963512 block, that's what was in my 71 SS Monte.
  3. Supposedly, (according to the GM restoration package) the 350 2bbl cars got 10 bolt only, and 350 4 bbl and up got 12 bolts. The 3 speed manual trans was only offered with the 2 bbl motor. The 4 speed was for 350 4 bbl cars and up except for the SS454. I've also heard about the control arm bushings but can't find anything in the parts books that says one way or the other.
  4. Bruce is correct. I forgot to add that part.

    matching numbers?

Yes, The VIN will be on the build sheet.
  6. My 71 SS454 was semi-gloss black. I think they also call it 60% gloss. Mine was factory paint, both semi-gloss and the color- Rosewood metallic.
  7. According to the restoration packet sent out for 1970 monte by GM, there are 5 trans codes. RR= 3speed manual, WA= 4 speed manual, VO= Powerglide, GS= TH350, CR= TH400. In the restoration document the specs for the TH400 are the same for an LS-3 and LS-5. It would seem according to info that GM put out that the TH400 was the same for a 402 & 454. Sorry.
  8. The lowers are aluminum and "L" shaped with screws going up through the bottom. The uppers were pot metal with no lip and the two studs cast in the back like the hood ornament.
  9. The part number for the valve assembly is: 1970 early ( no date specified) 4949863 1970 late, 1971 & 1972 4950745
  10. I finally had my car out this weekend. My original trunk paint looks just like the green 70ss on e-bay. Don't know what to call it, dark grey & white? His and mine are both early 70 Van Nuys cars. Mine is Dec 69.
  11. Mine looks just like yours. The "shell" and outsides of the fins on the eggcrate portion are chrome and the inside "flat" parts of the eggcrate are just a kind of flat looking silver color. There is a valley on the shell that has a semi gloss black accent if I remember correctly.
  12. I heard once upom a time (for 1970's at least) that the assembly line fenders got 3 bumpers and the over the counter (replacement from GM fenders got 1. I replaced my front fenders with real GM ones in 1990 and they each have 1.
  13. I was considering the sensor to be the float assembly in the bottle. That is what I have a spare of. I would call the part on the dash an indicator because that's all it does. I can give exact nomenclatures when I get to my assembly manual or parts book.
  14. I have a spare sensor unit that I bought fromn the dealer in about 1980 or so. It is in my storage unit and I'm working 10 hour days so it might be a little while till I can dig it out and photograph it for you.
  15. The sensing unit is a piece of tri colored plasitc with a float assembly. When the fluid is high the light shines through the green portion of the plastic and the interior indicator shines green. As the level drops it transitions to amber then red when it is time to add washer fluid. The lamp on the washer jar is wired to the wiper/washer system so the indicator assembbly only lights up when the washer button is pushed.
  16. Can't comment on the C/D version, but I have each of the paperback versions and would't do with out them. They are chock full of everything you want to know about YOUR car, not 70-88 monte's. I would highly recommend them.
  17. You are missing 2 male buckles, one for driver and one for passenger. As long as no one is sitting in the middle you should be able to use that one for your shoulder belt. There should be 5 male buckles for the front bench seat, my bucket seat car has 4 male buckles.
  18. I'll look at my 70 tonight. It is factory original.
  19. I thought I heard that the difference was in the exhaust manifolds. And also cause the vette HAD to make more power!
  20. If I recall correctly, the dash indicator is just a plastic pointer with a string attached to it. The string has a ring terminal that screws to the "shifter bowl" on the column. As the column moves with the shifter, the pointer moves. So to answer the question, nothing need to be done except align it. Put shifter in neutral, align pointer to neutral and you should be goo to go.

    71 ss question.

The 71 SS got a horizontal rub strip on the crown of the rear bumper. That was the SS version of a bumper guard. Non- SS cars still had vertical rear bumper guards as an option. Therefore, there was a slight difference in the bumpers because of the holes that were drilled to mount the pad. 71 SS also got the chrome outline/ semi gloss black on the lower trunk panel along with SS letters instead of BY CHEVROLET.
  22. The part number and description I gave is right out of the Chevrolet parts book. They list one PN for non-remote mirror, one for remote and one for Monte sport mirrors. They list the Monte with the Chevelle as using the same part, but the wangon and ElCamino have their own part numbers.
  23. PN# 3975403- Gasket, outside rearview remote mirror bracket, all (chevelle & monte) except wagon & el-camino or sport mirror. The PartsPlace Inc has this listed, might be it. XP2621M (1970 - 1972 Monte Carlo) MIRROR MOUNTING KIT $6.00
  24. Capri, Mine is a cd rom of the a-body parts manual with a July 72 printing date. It lists all the a-body parts from 1964 1972. It's mindboggling how many variations there were for things. There are 24 different part numbers for neg cables (chevelle, elky & monte, 1964-1972) and 22 positive cables. For certain parts, the assy manual just can't list all the variations. I use the assy manual for how it goes together, along with the Fisher Body manual, the Chassis Service manual, the Chassis Overhaul manual and use my parts CD to verify the numbers.
