Get the tool and take your time. Best and easiest way to remove without damaging the trim.

Value of matching number vs non-matching numbers

Agree with Andy. You need to find the Vin on the block by the suffix. You also mentioned that the trans is numbers matching also. Check those numbers also. Check the 12 bolt, should be a 12 bolt for ratio and more importantly date code. As you know a 402 4 speed 70 Monte Carlo is "rarer" than your 4 SS's. -
Here's mine! Lol first and only show I went to this year and won a trophy. First show and trophy with my 70 SS.

Can a th350 live behind a big block? Sure, for a little while anyway. Lol I would personally pick up the tci th400. I have used them in the past with no issues and the price is good.

Lol we have a few garages, basements, attics and other various spaces with parts that are "in stock"

Hey everyone! Finally got back to "barn find". Added the NK4 sport steering wheel and started to do the exhaust. Of course no matter what I tried the old studs broke in the manifolds. So my son and I removed the exhaust manifolds to remove the broken studs easier. Well of course, true to big blocks, the outer bolts on both manifolds were cracked off and upon further inspection the passenger side manifold was severely cracked almost in half. So we decided to change the original engine mounts, that turned out to be broken. Lol. We installed new mounts from Amazon that were 6.00 each and are exactly the same as the 35.00 Lakewood mounts. My brother then remembered that we had some big block exhaust manifolds "in stock". After finding, checking and painting the "in stock" manifolds and changing the exhaust pipe studs, they were installed. Then we added the pypes 2 1/2 stock style head pipes. That's where we called it quits, for now. Next is to add the flowmaster header back exhaust system we have "in stock" from a parts car.

It's a true SS, numbers matching. Option 1 !!! If you were reading this on a Chevelle site about a numbers matching Monte Carlo SS, what would you be saying about putting a small block into it? Just saying.....

I have a Holley mechanical fuel pump painted as not to let some people know what it is. 4 core stock radiator with 7 blade fan with heavy duty clutch, 160 degree thermostat and stock big block fan shroud. Never has seen over 180. Even hot lapping 4x at the drag strip in 90 degree weather. Has stock pulleys and v-belts.

You're welcome. Awesome progress and work!

Got them through the guy who assembled the rear for my 70. He is a strange dealer.

I have Strange c-clip 30 spline stock replacement axles in my 70 SS with timken bearings.

Beautiful job you are doing!

Hey Mike, Have used both on our Montes AMD hands down is more accurate, thicker and just as good if not better than original/NOS.

Ok, congratulations to the move to big block! The 489 will have goobs of torque! Depends on how your springs are. A/c small block springs are similar to big block non a/c springs. So that is up to you. I would put the engine in with the springs you have and go from there. I have the hooker super comp headers on my 496. This version of the big block likes to breathe! I believe my primaries are 2inch with 3 1/2 collectors. Some will say the tubes are too big and you will lose torque. Don't worry, you will have soooooo much you won't ever notice. As far as flexplate, I would go with an sfi approved one from a company like ATI. Again, alot of torque, you want to do this once. Keep the questions coming. Lolol

Without also. She's beautiful naturally!

Exactly what Kevin said. My 71 is the same.

Congrats Rob! Have fun!!
-
Have them on my 70 SS with hooker super comp headers. No issues what so ever. I used stock replacement (pre bent) lines from inline tube. Fit perfectly.

Happy birthday and happy retirement!!!!!

You may want to think the fuel line size over. I know how my 496 loves fuel so I can say the 502 will also. Lolol I used a RobMC 1/2 fuel tank sender that I installed into the tank, then ran cloth 1/2 fuel line up to the pump following the stock line until it went into the frame. Had to remove the stock 3/8 line for the 1/2 to fit. Then the same line from the pump, with a micron filter to the carb. I used the "cloth" line due to it being much easier to bend and install. Like you I like to keep things as KISS as possible. Lol plus I don't like doing things twice. Lol Also, check your line size, I believe all Montes had 3/8 fuel line. Small and big block.

Ahhhh ok. With a roller cam you would use a bronze tip fuel pump rod as not to wear the cam out for the fuel pump. As far as the return line, you could leave it alone, (open), or cap it if you have a vented gas cap. I just left mine open. No fumes or gas smell. And I store the car in a garage. If you went with an electric pump, you could use the line as a return line from the regulator if you get that type of regulator. Supposed to keep the pump running cooler by having a return line.
