Msheriff
Guys I have a 70 ss Monte, don't have the numbers matching motor or build sheet it's an US built car but I think it has the original turbo 400 in it . I was told possibly there may be numbers on the tranny that could identify it as an ss trans . I've had this car 30 years , has the load leveler susp, fact buckets and gauges , 1 1/8" front sway bar ... Has a 73 454 . Does anyone know how to identify the transmission ? 1970mcss
There should be a tag with a letter code on it
sredmyer
The number should be stamped on the housing behind the shifter mechanism. See the picture attached, I have circled, in red, the area on which the numbers should be stamped.
Msheriff
is the number going to be the same as the vin ? What should I see if it's an ss tranny
overdrive
My car was the same as yours. No build sheet and the block was replaced with a '71 block. I found the build sheet a couple years after I decoded the trans. I have a TH400 rebuild book that has all of the TH400 codes, and the code for '70 Monte Carlos with the 454 is CR. The Montes with any other motor had different codes. This is mine. Dan
overdrive
Welcome to the site. The partial VIN is stamped on the driver side. The CR tag is on the passenger side. Dan
Rob Peters
Mark, Welcome to the First Generation Monte Carlo Club web site. We hope you like what you see here and decide to become a dues paying member of the club. A large group of members here will be at the Eastern Meet in Carlisle Pa in two weeks. That is just a hop, skip and a jump on I-81 from you there in Winchester, Va. You should hop in your Monte and drive up to meet a great group of members in one place at one time. We will all be at the Chevrolet Nationals Show but many of us will be arriving on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday before the show starts on Friday. We come through Winchester a couple times a year on our way to other destinations. Winchester is always a great gas stopover due to the lower prices there, compared to other areas. rob
Paul Bell
If your car is an 454 car, the rear end would be a 12 bolt and it's code would be CRK for 2.56 ratio, CRU for 3.31 and CRV for 3.31 posi.
Msheriff
Thanks guys for all your help . Car needs restored . I've held on to it all these years in hopes to do the car. Went to run the numbers a month a go and found out all this about documenting SS's . I found this car in a barn 30 years ago so doubt very much it's any type of clone but not wanting to put the money in it to restore it if I can't document it just in case I ever sold it. We've been scratching our heads trying to figure this car out. This site is just great is all I can say. I'll let you guys know what I find

ripleydale
If you have the matching VIN on your turbo 400 transmission, you can safely assume it was a big block, but could have been a 402 car as well as an SS.
420ponies
Welcome to the Madness(Monte Carlo that is)!! Glad you joined! Sounds like a car you can make just the way you want it. You should make plans to make it up to the show. I believe 34 Montes will be on hand this year. Always a great time. Hope to see you there, with or without your Monte. remember, pictures are welcome here.
