GatorDog72
I asked around about the valve to cylinder issue and have gotten a lot of varied responses. Some people have said that as long as it doesn't hit, you are good. Valves shouldn't be moving around like that anyway. Others have said that you NEED at least .100" clearance. I searched a while on google and found that clearance can be an issue on the smaller bore 396 with big 2.300 valves and high lift. There's not much info on the larger bore stuff, so I'm going to assume it's a non-issue. I found a way to check it with clay and found there's plenty of clearance. I guess I was worried about nothing.... I just don't want to trash this thing the first time it starts. I'm still trying to round up cash to finish this thing and haven't made much progress in the past month, but I will post some pictures of what I have so far. Nothing is really assembled in the pics, I just threw it together to see how it looks

downset71
my other ride has a 496 10.25comp. 714 lift. AFR 335 cnc heads. Vic Jr 1050 dominator. made about 670hp pump gas for reference- good luck with build!
GatorDog72
looks like I bought the wrong oil pan, I don't think its going to fit in the car. Any suggestions? Im looking at Milodon #30950. Anyone running this pan?
GatorDog72
Got the new oil pan installed and new powermax starter installed today. Also got the heads torqued down and the guide plates and rocker studs installed. I'm going to focus on getting this together soon because the car is almost ready for the motor to go in. All there is left to do is measure push rod length and order them. I have all the rest of the parts ready to go on. My neighbors are going to love me when this fires haha
Presamax
Thanks for sharing your build. I'm on the fence on whether to do a SBC or BBC. Seems like more potential in a BBC for a pump gas street car.
GatorDog72
Thanks for sharing your build. I'm on the fence on whether to do a SBC or BBC. Seems like more potential in a BBC for a pump gas street car. Some of these newer LS style small blocks have some serious potential for power, but I wanted to keep it old school with a big block and a carburetor. You could probably make as much or more power with a newer style engine so it's mainly what you prefer. I finally got the rest of the engine done this weekend after starting the rebuild more than a year ago. It's oil-primed and ready to drop in the car. I had to fight with the lash adjustment on the rockers...every time I tightened the stud girdle, the lash would change. Major PITA. Wrenches were thrown a few times along with lots of swearing. I'm just glad it's done. I'm going to figure out how to post a video of it running very soon. I was going to fire it on the stand but I don't want it to tip over and ruin my day. Plus it's all the more motivation to get it in the car!
Presamax
Wow!!!!! Looks great. I prefer to go old school. Not a big LS fan even though they're very powerful engines.
mymontesa70
So how's the install going? Get it in there and fired up yet?
GatorDog72
So how's the install going? Get it in there and fired up yet? It's installed in the car now and very close to hearing it run. I wanted to fire it last weekend, but I underestimated the wiring harness installation. I got about 5 connections to make and its ready to go! GatorDog72
We have ignition!!! Got this thing fired up this morning after some difficulties with the MSD box not wanting to play with the computers. I cannot believe how this thing sounds, its a monster! I can guarantee every person within a 10 mile radius heard this thing roar. I need to set up a youtube account to post a video hopefully later today. All that work was totally worth it to hear it fire up like that. Very excited, can't wait to drive it now!!!
