Gush's monte Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 Hi, I thought I would introduce myself as I have been a member for a couple of months and have benefitted greatly from the wealth of information on this site. I am starting the detailing of rear suspension/frame/undercarraige of my 71 Monte. The car is a 71 triple black original 402 but has a 496 motor in it now. I will eventually rebuild the 402 and put it back in the car. I do not have a build sheet but I do have the protector plate for the car. I have verified that I have the original TH400 and 12 bolt rear end still in the car. I plan on working on the car in stages with the rear suspension first, I put the car up on jack stands and will start the disasembly this week. From the posts I have read pictures are desired so I will try to post them when I figure out how.
Gush's monte Posted December 1, 2013 Author Posted December 1, 2013 Thanks, can't seem to get the pictures on the post. I can upload them to the gallery pictures but can't add them to the post. I will keep trying.
Gush's monte Posted December 1, 2013 Author Posted December 1, 2013 I think I figured out how to post pictures. Here's a couple of pictures of the car's undercarraige that I will be working on. Lots of undercoating and surface rust to deal with. And here is one of the car
Gush's monte Posted December 1, 2013 Author Posted December 1, 2013 Thanks, the color and that it was a original big block with almost every option but cruise control and power seat sealed it for me when I bought it this summer. I put springs in it when I first got the car and picked them out with information I read in on one of the forums. The information within the forums here is incredible.
ss454-71 Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 Very nice car. What factory was it built in? You can tell by the letter in the vin.
Gush's monte Posted December 1, 2013 Author Posted December 1, 2013 Thankyou. The seventh letter on the vin is B so I believe it was built in Baltamore. I am hoping when I start taking it apart to find a build sheet. I have to recover the front buckets this winter so maybe I will find one in the seats. I do have the protector plate and all the dates codes on the engine block, heads, carburator, distributer, transmission, and rear end check out corrrect.
Canuck Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 I have found 2 build sheets in my Baltimore built 70 Monte. Both were in the interior (front seat and lower part of back seat). I still have not checked the gas tank.
7tonemonte Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 I found 2 in my Baltimore Monte, front seat and rear seat as well, nothing on top of my gas tank but rust and salt
Patrick Sheean Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 Great looking Monte, keep the pictures coming.
Gush's monte Posted December 9, 2013 Author Posted December 9, 2013 Here is some progress I made. The rear suspension, exhaust and gas tank has been removed (no build sheet on the gas tank). After an inspection of the floor I found two rust areas that will need to be repaired. One in the center of the trunk (this was known when I bought the car) and the other under the drivers rear seat. I also have removed the seats as the drivers bucket has two rips in it and will need to be recovered.
black07ss Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 Nice progress!! Is that a Chevelle parts car in the background? 1
Gush's monte Posted December 9, 2013 Author Posted December 9, 2013 No I think I will leave that one alone .
footballubet Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 Welcome to the Madness we call the FGMCC! Nice progress. Doesn't look like you are going to have some of the extensive repairs other members have gone through. Keep the pictures coming!
LostnFound Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 Sweet....she's still very solid and healthy
70 Iron Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 Beautiful Monte John,I had a triple black with a 402 a few yrs ago . Also that Phantom blue Chevelle in the back ground,is that yours also ?I had one of those 70SS 396 in that color with white stripes and black interior several yrs ago like in 1973 .  Bruce,is there any reason why you like that triple black Monte  Terry
Gush's monte Posted December 9, 2013 Author Posted December 9, 2013 Thanks Terry and yes that is my 1970 Chevelle SS. That car was restored by the previous owner so not much to do on it. This winters project is the Monte I bought this summer. Eventually I plan on detailing the engine compartment and will have to decide if I want to rebuild the original 402 I got with the car or keep the 496 in it. The car is a blast to drive with the 496 and 373 gears.
MGD72Monte Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 Nice Monte, in great shape. That's the time to restore them, way before they start rotting out. Good luck.
Gush's monte Posted September 22, 2014 Author Posted September 22, 2014 Her is an update on my project. It is now a frame off restoration. So far I have sandblasted and painted the frame, rebuilt the fraont and rear suspension. I am curently working on rust repair on the front cowl area, under rear seat and trunk. The original 402 is at the machine shop and the transmission is at a freinds shop to be rebuilt. Here are some pictures of the progress. http://i921.photobucket.com/albums/ad55/johngushue1/monte%20restoration/imagejpg5_zps502ef778.jpg http://i921.photobucket.com/albums/ad55/johngushue1/monte%20restoration/imagejpg4_zps5a2f9140.jpg http://i921.photobucket.com/albums/ad55/johngushue1/monte%20restoration/imagejpg3_zps1c43e219.jpg http://i921.photobucket.com/albums/ad55/johngushue1/monte%20restoration/imagejpg1_zps0f0a4db7.jpg http://i921.photobucket.com/albums/ad55/johngushue1/monte%20restoration/imagejpg1_zps75c354f2.jpg http://i921.photobucket.com/albums/ad55/johngushue1/monte%20restoration/iphone085_zpsae2c42de.jpg
LostnFound Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 Sweeeeeet! Even the jack stands look nice.
Patrick Sheean Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 Great work Robert. Wish my frame looked like that!
Vinniepooh Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 Wow that's came a long way. From reading the beginning of this post it sounded like you were just going to do some clean up of the rear area, I guess you couldn't find a stopping point until you ran out of frame going forward! It's looking GREAT.
