KCMC
I am not a member of this site but bought a second generation Monte Carlo as my first car when I was 16 and have now been looking for a first gen to buy and came across this one near me. First gens are better looking to me than second gens and that's why I decided to look for a first gen rather than a second gen to have something similar to my first car but one I will like even more. I came across your website and love it and will definitely have to become a member if I do end up buying a first gen Monte. I didn't see any posts on one I found near me for sale and wanted to get an opinion from your group, which is much more experienced than me, on this one for sale. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. MC1of80
No engine pics? Underbody pics? Looks to be a nice first gen. Not picking it apart but it has no sail panel emblems, 71 trunk lock bezel and 71 steering wheel. No deal breaker but be known pieces may be needed to make correct 70. If you purchase it and are so inclined.
KCMC
Engine and underbody pics show up for me plus video. I was really trying to find one under 20k if possible, but this one is close by me and looks to be in decent shape. Just not sure if it's worth the price or if ones in similar condition come up often for less. From me looking around at others that have sold over the past year, I thought maybe I could find one in the 18k to 22k range. Not looking for a show car but a decent looking driver. I like to drive anything I buy and not be too worried about every detail. Something I can enjoy but still looks good, at least from 10 feet away lol. Marks71
My main concern is the comment in the exterior description “some rust in the usual places” and the bubbling at the wheel arches and the lower trunk lid lip. The bad lighting on many of the photos is common on that site but you still can zoom in on them to get a closer look. I think for me, the rust issues would be the deal breaker for that price.
Rob Peters
I agree with Mark. I don't like the dark pictures. I would also be worried about the description of "rust in the usual places statement. At that price if there is evidence of rust the price in my opinion is too high. If it is close to you I would for sure go take a look at it. To me, looking at the pictures of the engine compartment it looks like the cover over the radiator has been painted either over pitting or rust. The trunk looks very clean. I would inspect the rear wheel wells very closely and the areas on the fenders behind the front tires. Again, go check it out, have them put it up on a lift. I did notice it is a 12 bolt rear end which is a plus for a 350. Also it being a bucket seat and console car is nice. In one of the pictures I thought I saw a slight tear or hole in one of the side of one of the seat backs. If you go look at it and decide to buy it, that would be a great Christmas gift to yourself. rob
cny first gen 71
For that kind of money I wouldn't want any rust any where. Mine looks great in pictures and if someone offered me 26 grand it may be gone 🤣 maybe not but would be really thinking.
DragCat
As others have mentioned, if it close go look at it. The video is a little better than the dark pictures. Main concern as mentioned "paint bubbling" and usual area rust. One thing I saw was gas gauge read E , maybe its my eyes but if not possible ground/elec issue. Do some research as your limiting yourself within a certain price range, first gen's are up in price. Below is a link for some Monte's on consignment, keep in mind there may be a 5 or 10% premium in the price if you go that route. Body and paint are EXPENSIVE, everything else is doable over time. And remember, original parts and pieces on older cars break https://www.gatewayclassiccars.com/make/chevrolet/model/monte carlo?min_year=1970&max_year=1972 Good luck and keep us posted
KCMC
Thanks to all who replied with advise. I plan on going to inspect in person as soon as I get a chance. Because of the expense of changing an interior or a full exterior color change, I prefer to find one that is acceptable in both areas, but I know that severely limits my options or I will have to go over the current budget to find what i'm looking for. I'm ok with any of the years, 70-72, and ok with small mods that don't change the original look to much. My preference is an auto with buckets and a horseshoe console shifter rather than a bench in black or a manual console in black interior would be second choice. I already have a 69 Chevelle four speed so I thought having a Monte with the bucket horseshoe would be a nice pairing to it. I know the black interior probably limits my search. The exterior color i'm a little more flexible with which helps a little I guess. The one I plan on seeing meets both the interior and exterior color criteria, I actually really like the black cherry with the black interior and think it's a nice combo. The rust they mentioned was my concern for the price they are asking. I probably wouldn't hesitate if most of the rust is surface only and they were asking closer to 15k. I agree with cny first gen 71 and think for 26k it should be rust free with no bubbling anywhere. I'm guessing when I see it in person, i'm not going to be happy with that price in that condition and they probably won't come down as much as I would want, knowing I would have to deal with the potential rust areas, which means my search will probably continue. If I have patience and luck, bring a trailer seems to be a good site for coming across pretty good condition ones at more reasonable prices. I've been using autotempest for a lot of my searches to try to cover more ground. If there are any other search engines or good ways of searching that I'm not utilizing that anyone knows of, it would be great to know. Just for fun, I attached a pic of my second gen Monte and my current Chevelle. I paid $1,500 for the Monte when I was 16. It was primed for paint when purchased and I eventually had it painted candy apple red. It was the color my 16 year old brain chose at the time but it turned out pretty well. I haven't found a pic after the paint job yet. Thanks again for any help and I'm confident I'll eventually be a first gen Monte owner at some point.
KCMC
Oh, by the way. Do you have any other members located near the Cincinnati area. If so, maybe I'll look for them at some of the local cruise ins or something.
jft69z
The rust bubbling up over the rear wheel lips is somewhat substantial, especially on the left side (pics are sort of crappy as already stated). Pull that wheel trim and poke around, and it'll open up a can of worms. Possible the car may have had a black vinyl top (trim tag code 'B'), and that could have contributed to rust in that area. If going to see car, scrutinize the back window area thoroughly, especially from inside the trunk to see if it is bad/repaired, and how extensive it may have been. Like said, for $27K, that would turn me away right off the bat. That is not a cheap fix over the wheels, not even looking to see what the bottom of the front fenders look like. Still, a nice looking car for the most part, but hard to tell without getting a good look. We do have a member in that area, he'll pop up here at some point.
Dtret
Here I am. lol. I’ve been reading and scrutinizing the car but I never actually looked at your location. I’m in Amelia. East of Cincinnati on 125. Reach out if you want and I can go check out the car with you. Four eyes are better than two. But I’m half blind so maybe not. 2
