Beautiful truck !! Great story and nice family collection you guys have.4 points

I was too lazy to go out in the shop to crawl under the car, lol4 points

It was the scheduled second car started to be built on 6-24. Not necessarily the final build date. My 71 Cali car was 12 09-12. Vin 110678. So it was the 10678 car built for the 71 model year. Hope this helps.4 points

Today 86 years ago, my Grandfather, Gottfried Stange, purchased a 1937 Dodge Pick-Up. He paid $479.75 from Hodges Dodges Ferndale Michigan and may have included a trade in of a Model T. One of my older brothers purchased it from Grandpa, in 1964 and still owns it! Here is a picture in of it in 2010, shortly after he restored it. This is part of the reason I still have my 71 Monte Carlo.3 points

I'm really working you guys this past week! So here's my question. In the absence of a body/trim tag, how do we determine the build date from the build sheet? Our own documentation here on firstgenmc.com doesn't go into it and what I've found online is unclear and a bit confusing. I know from the VIN that the car was built in Baltimore ("B") and I have a partial build sheet with the "sched no date" in box #10. That number is "02 06-24". There is information here that says the numbers vary in meaning depending on the plant. "Atlanta and Baltimore runs from 01...99 then starts over..." Much of what I'm reading says the first number, 02, is the first day of production but it doesn't say if that means week or month or something else. Looking at a 1970 calendar, the first work day of the month of June appears to be Monday. I would assume that the 06-24 would mean June 24th but I can't find anything to make those numbers mesh. Anyone know for sure what "02 06-24" means for a 1970 Monte Carlo built at the Baltimore plant? By the way... I did buy a car! I'll reveal soon! Much thanks to all of you for the helpful info during my search!3 points

My 71 base model 350 2 barrel has the 2 line sending unit. I'd say look at it and see which one you have, you should be able to see it without dropping the tank. Caution ⚠️ you may need to bend the arm on the sending unit to get correct reading, took me a while to figure out that's what is wrong with mine. Welcome to the site also. Tell your friend about us this is a great group of people here.3 points

Here's what I found based on my research: The Tonawanda engine plant was in Buffalo, NY. It is my understanding a vast majority of the engines came from here. For Canadian built cars many engines came from the McKinnon Industries plant in St. Catherine, Ontario. It appears some engines were build in Flint but I'm not sure if any for our Montes came from there or not. I'm not sure if the 2nd and 3rd plant above had their own decal but I will say I have only ever seen the Tonawanda decal. See the link below for details https://www.firstgenmc.com/forums/index.php?/resources/decodingengine/3 points

It doesn't matter, they still will only go in one way. Thank you for posting pics.3 points

OK, I have already taken too much of your time but if I didn't mention these two vehicles, I would be sad. The Anglia was raced by my Brother in-law and two of his friends till about 1973 I think. It was sold and the second owner still has it! Top picture was at COBO Hall in Detroit for the big car show, AUTO RAMA. (That same car show is going on TODAY!) The TR-3B is still in the family since 1967 and just underwent a full body off resto about a year ago. I did a low buck resto in 1973 on it also.2 points

In addition to what @MC1of80 said, I did find this interesting bit of information that may be helpful. Full disclosure, I am not a Holley expert. Do you have a PCV system connected? A faulty PCV valve will cause oil to be pulled into the intake and burned with combustion. Does the engine smoke after idling for a while? If so, high vacuum at idle will pull oil past the valve stem seals or even the rings. This will usually manifest after sitting at a traffic signal or someplace where you're idling for a bit. You hit the gas and POOF, several seconds of oil burned off with a big cloud of smoke behind you. Just some thoughts. Hope it helps! Remote troubleshooting is difficult unless it's a 'known' common issue.2 points

Michael, We do have some members that were planning to attend and I am sure the members attending will promote our membership. Will we have a large group in attendance, I can't say for sure. We have our Eastern Meet in Kentucky in Somerset, KY in May. We have a Mini-Meet in Carlisle PA in June and another Mini-Meet in Syracuse, NY in July. On top of what we are doing out in the East we also have an upcoming Mini-Meet in Summerland BC Canada in May and a Western Meet in Logan, UT in July. So, as you can see we are out there at many events promoting our club You have been very upfront about not wanting (actually refusing) to join the FGMCC but we have allowed you to promote your gathering here on our site. Come on man, it is only $25.00. The hosting for this site is paid for by the dues from our dues paying members of the club. It is not a free club to run. It costs money to run a club and being that we are a club dedicated to the First Generation Monte Carlo it limits us to only 3 years of production models to draw from, I feel we have done well to keep this club and website in operation for going on 23 years. We are a very dedicated group. As far as attending your get-together as a group is a difficult thing because we would not be able to participate directly with your group as a club function. One of the reasons are insurance related. Our club is insured so any member attending a club function must be a dues paying member for our our insurance to cover us. Since your group is not insured I personally would not plan to attend. To come onto our club site, where we have allowed you to advertise your event, and criticize us for not attending your event just doesn't make sense to me. It sounds like you have gotten a lot of participation already so why would you come here and knock our club for not attending as a group. It is my hope that some of the members of our club who are planning to come don't back out, nor am I going to encourage them to but your attitude toward us does not encourage participation. rob2 points

So close but working out details and w8ll consult with our MC friends for expertise. brakes are weak - I believe rear drums need to be adjusted - fronts are new calipers on coil overs and tubular control arms. coming off idle engine hesitates - investigating Holly Accelerator adjustment after market voltage gauge does not work - will trace line and check ground after market temp gauge not working - same as above and already replaced temp probe (also have temp probes for electric radiator and factory temp probe on intake for idiot lights) engine runs great and then will smoke a heavy smoke for 20 seconds (not necessarily blue in color but not wispy like coolant) - need to drive her a bit and reconsidering remounting intake. Bought engine used from friend - ran well in August with just a little blow by. any comments always appreciated and have new buddy Ray of MC club coming over this week. thanks all, Keith IMG_3503.MOV1 point

Very cool!! Can’t wait til there’s no salt out here. This state and city seem to go overboard with salting. Stupidity reigns supreme in the state of ILLANNOY and the (Sh)ity of Chicago.1 point

If the modulater valve on the trans is leaking it will cause a off white smoke.1 point

I have not seen the steel clips reproduced, only the plastic ones. I’m sure the steel ones could be reused though. The hood insulation seems fairly consistent between vendors in my experience. The Parts Place, Original Parts Group, CARS Inc, etc.1 point

I used cargo coils CC501 still didn't sit quite as I wanted it I put 2 inch spacers in the rear to get height I wanted. I think just with the springs it was about stock height.1 point

I can’t recall the part number but I simply requested the Moog spring that was the same as OEM at the parts store and they looked it up. They gave me the option of the standard spring or the cargo option and I went with the cargo. The ride height is the same but the spring rate is different and won’t compress as easily with weight in the trunk. My front springs are also Moog OEM replacements. There are many different front springs depending on the engine and if it has AC.1 point

I have a couple that are a little better than yours but still need work and one thats a little better but still has scratches on the bottom. I sold a pair of new ones a while back that I had laying around for a bunch of years. I did buy a couple off ebay quite a few years back that wasn't a complete set.1 point

Great looking and sounding Monte! Why the high idle? Choke? Vacuum leak? Both can cause weak brakes and hesitation off idle. What's the timing at? What are the engine specs?1 point

This is super cool! I mean, look at the "heavy duty parts list". It gives you the part numbers if you wanted to build your own! Assuming you could get those parts, of course.1 point

Thanks Dennis! Assuming 1-2 days was normal assembly time back in the day, there is a moderately good chance that this car was finished on my birthday in 1970. It must be fate. 👌1 point

The bushings will only fit one way. The side with the collar/ shoulder is a little bigger than the side without.1 point

Glen, Occasionally you will see partial or complete fiber optic systems on EBay. Definitely not easy to find. There are different optic systems from GM as certain Chevrolet models, Cadillac and Oldsmobile had them too but they are all different. I had the front half in my Monte when I purchased it. It took me quite a few years until I was able to find the back half. Keep your eyes open. If you are coming to Carlisle, both Rob Peters and I have them in our Monte’s. Come take a look and some reference photos.1 point

Happy to. I've actually had this very post/idea in my head for the past 10 years, simply because there is nothing out there on some of these old Factory engines. everyone modifies them, and then, well, its not original anymore.1 point

That's absolutely true. What we're saying is just put some weight on the suspension to get the sway bar end links started. This has nothing to do with tightening up the control arm to spec. Those would still be left loose until you get the full weight of the car on the suspension, then tighten to spec. This will help prevent stressing the control arm bushings, especially if they're rubber.1 point

Hi all, I've attached a copy of the build sheet below for the '71 4 speed 402 Monte that recently sold at Barrett Jackson. I owned this vehicle from 1995 to 2001. The owner before me, Jon Copeland, Dallas/Fort Worth area, installed the rear SS Black panel and the rear bumper. Jon, had sent me pictures of this Monte Carlo after I contacted him through his Hemmings Ad. He sent a few pictures of the car and at that time there was no SS panel in place. When I flew into Dallas to pick up the car, the rear panel treat ment is in place and Jon informed me that he had these parts installed and that they were valuable and could easily be removed if I wanted them off. The black SS panel looked awesome on this car and set off the car with the black vinyl top. This car was a GM Executive order vehicle out of Davis Chevy in Bismarck ND. She was equipped very well, 402 300hp, advertised by Chevrolet as a 400 CID with that designation on the original air cleaner assembly. PS, PB, Tilt, AC, R Defog, 3.31 12 bolt Posi, 4 spoke sport wheel, AM 8 track, dual chrome side mirrors, F-41 suspension, super - lift suspension. The air lift never functioned when I owned it, the rear shocks were standard, but the air lines were still there. I added the MSD system, edelbrock intake, painted and the 750 dual feed Holley. The AC Compressor was also bad when I bought her. She also had electrical issues due to the gauge circuit board had a hole worn through it and someone attempted to jumper the wires across the hole. I replaced the printed circuit panel, added stainless dual exhaust, replaced all 10 lower trim mouldings, the taillight mouldings, and installed a new front bumper. I had RED's Auto on Babcock Blvd. Pittsburgh Re - Upholster the Seats. She might have an aftermarket Blue colored flex fan on there as well, as I believe I swapped it in there. There was also a bit of black overspray or undercoating around the passenger headlight area that stubbornly remained attached to the paint against my tender efforts to remove it. A truly beautiful, great driving ride. I moved to MI in 2016. Thanks, Dave1 point

I installed this valve but have not had the system charged yet. Be aware that the connection to charge the system faces down at a 45 degree angle, not up. I don't think it is going to be a problem, there looks to be plenty of room to connect the machine hose. All other connections are in the stock location.1 point
