Andreas
SS Specialists, check out this buildsheet and let me know what you think. This SS Monte is located somewhere in Canada... Mystery SS
Shadow Gray SS
I would want to see the engine pad and look underneath the console for any cutting.
502ci
I would like to see the original build sheet not a photo copy...anything could have been added to that sheet... Bill
Sam (Bones)
I would like to see the trans, a 2.56 gear and a 4 spd????
Dans '70 Z20
Seems to stand out a bit on build sheet. Maybe it is the pic or the fact that is what I am focusing on. I have to say though. The M-20 as listed on build sheet is the correct 4spd used for our cars due to its lower first gear. It was used in alot of the larger/heavier GM vehicles instead of the M-21 to help them of the line. M-22 rockcrusher was rarely used. The mystery continues Dan
Andreas
Unfortunately, this pic and a few pics of the Monte is all we have here. I would also like to see the engine stamps... For all GM assembly specialists, what does "Bypass Code 4" in the lower left corner mean? Also, what would be the engine and trans codes for a 454 4 spd? This build sheet has RN and CR Here are more pics (yes, I know someone put fake 'SS' emblems on the console and the back): Mystery SS #1 Mystery SS #2 Mystery SS #3 Mystery SS #
Jared Richey
Could this be the missing link we have all been waiting for? Regardless its a very nice car. I like the Gold color, but I just don't know about Gold with Green interior...I guess I could handle it.
72 LS5
Sandlewood interior would be the obvious choice for me! Regarding the 4-speed - 1st gear is probably worth about 60 mph with the 2.56s!
lastss
Is it for sale? How much??
DaveC
the build sheet makes me wonder!!! comparing it to my 70 BB 4 speed build sheet, I find the following; Steering column codes are not the same (mine is bucket, this one originally was bench) but column should be the same. speedo cable codes do not match, (but his code does match the code on a 70 A/T sheet I have) my 4 speed option is printed #M20 4 SPD TRANS compared to his #M20 4SPD MANUAL My box#28 for trans is WB4F compared to his CR and a few other inconsistancies....my box #103 "trans cooler lines" has -- -- his has nothing, different drive shaft codes too, etc. Oh well hate to be a nay-sayer, maybe the differences can be chalked off to the difference between an L.A. built 454 car and a Balt. built 402 car would love to be wrong though,
Chris
Why would both A01 and A02 be listed? A01 is "All tinted glass" while A02 is "Tinted windshield". You coded one or the other but not both. Beautiful car regardless.
Sam (Bones)
here's picture of my actual 1970 Van Nuys built bench seat 4 spd for comparisons
Chris
Look very closely at the "U", "N", and "L" in the line with M20. The type font is different. They have horizontal lines at the top of each. None of the other codes using those characters have those. Also the * is not centered next to the code as it is on all others.
Grease
I would really prefer to see the old yellow copy ( original ) I would lean towards falsified paperwork .
DaveC
Sam, I can't make out box #70 (steering column) on your sheet I have DB yours looks like it might be DE? it looks like we both have the same speedo cable code too. we both also have *M20 4 SPD TRANS Not *M20 4SPD MANUAL. I think this cars build sheet must be fake. its still a very cool car that sure would be fun to own
Steve Wagner
I agree with Chris, it looks like a different font.
DDay
so, if were real what's it worth? six figure's.I'd cash it in...
Andreas
I agree with Chris, it looks like a different font. Not only that, but if you zoom in and look really close, you will also notice that the M20 code is slightly out of alignment while all other code numbers are perfectly aligned... Hmmmm.... David Mau
so, if were real what's it worth? I think that if it were real, the footnote under the 1970 Monte Carlo values in the Old Cars Price Guide would read something like this: NOTE: Add 35 percent for SS 454. Add 25 percent for 402 engine option. SS 454 cars equipped with 4-speed manual transmission, value inestimable. Unfortunately, though, I have to agree with virtually everyone else here; that copy of the build sheet appears to be modified - just like the car. I work with type fonts on a daily basis in my profession, and it's pretty obvious to me that the line calling out the "M20 4 SPEED MANUAL" is typed in a different font than the rest of the build sheet. Andreas also pointed out that the justification of that one line is out of whack as well. A photocopy won't usually show that something has been "pasted up" - but if you've got a photocopy, then you've got the original. Show me that original, please. That said, it appears to be a very nice "phantom car". I wish I could read what all it says about the car on the show sign. Is it being shown as a "phantom" or is it being passed off as a genuine, factory-built 4-speed SS454? If it were mine, I'd lose those incorrect "SS" emblems on the console and rearend. Every time I see incorrect and/or additional emblems on a car I'm always reminded of an article in a magazine where they were creating a "clone" of sorts and added extra emblems in places where there weren't any on the original model they were copying. The caption underneath the photo showing the incorrectly-placed (additional) emblems said something like, "Additional emblems are a nice touch on a bogus machine". Hmmmmm, I wonder... is someone over-compensating for something? I would've found this whole car more believable (even though it appears to be a real SS454) without that close-but-no-cigar build sheet copy and without those additional "SS" emblems that weren't on the original cars. Dave P.S. Did 402 and 350-powered 4-speed cars have a black or a white shifter ball from the factory? It seems that in most pictures I see of 4-speed cars they're white, but the one in this car is black. Simple to change, I know, but I'm curious. Tazman
Correect me if I'm wrong but were'nt the air ride compressors for the Montes always a flat black from the factory.

Steve G
hello, I looked at some buildsheets on this site, and looked at my own, My car is a 72 Van Nuys built model but i figured it could help for referrence. The font changes on some letters, * symbol is not placed properly in a few places, And its the only buildsheet where i have seen letters and entire words leaning, tilted crooked etc... I have noticed that alot of sheets have words descriptions spelled differently so that doesnt mean anything. If someone was going to pay to have such an expensive unique car built back in the day why the hell would he go gold with green interior? I think its fake. I had a very original bench seat 4 speed 70 malibu which had a black knob with the shift pattern on it in white.
Andreas
I have heard from an ex-FGMCC member from Canada that this car had been a bench-seat TH400 Monte SS just a few years ago... So we will keep looking for these rare, original 4-spd Monte SS'... Reminds me of the LS6 Monte SS last year, which turned out to be a LS5 with a 'freshened-up' buildsheet after all...
