  8. Now that you know you have the wrong carb make sure you search for the correct build date to match your car. Jeff Dotterer Dated parts in PA may be able to help you. I have a professionally rebuilt 7040202 which is for 1970 300hp cars. It is probably jetted pretty close for a 71 BB but not correct for a numbers matching car. Also, when you get the rigt one let me know if you need the correct choke assembly as shown in my attached pic. As you know, your choke rod is not correct either. Best

  9. Had simular problems with my 71 after replacing pcb for gauges. Problem ended up being the plug pins not making connections to the pcb… I would expect gauges to go back down when connections are good. Just my 2 cents..

  12. I have used that fuel pump with my carbureted (at the time) LS6 454 engines in both my old Monte & current Z/28. No problems at all, and I also used their fuel regulator to knock down the pressure too..

  15. That's my guess Most numbers are on firewall and mostly paint codes, sometime a option code. NO pics.

  17. That is so great to see that happen! I remember my 71 turned over when we were cruising Woodward!

  18. If you have a numbers matching car it should have the correct carb to be complete along with the alternator, water pump, etc. The safest thing to do is disconnect the choke until you get the correct carb. The slot and choke rod are compatible.

  19. Like Joe stated that pump will work with a regulator. I would also suggest 1/2" fuel line from the tank to the carb to feed the beast if you do not have that already. Also a sump in the tank or the option I took for "Big Red" which is a 1/2" sending unit from RobMC that has an extension towards the back bumper. This way you can run a stock fuel tank.

  20. Agreed, seems really helpful. Are you going to ask him if he'd consider making them, and how many sets it would take for him to maybe consider it?

  23. The gentleman responded to me already. I mentioned what Rob told me regarding the Monte lenses only having two bubbles, whereas other GM vehicles having three. here’s what he had to say…

  24. It's Thanksgiving 2023 and our family is all here for dinner. My oldest Grandson has his learners permit so I let him drive my 71 Monte Carlo. We had a beautiful day here in Michigan so I went to start the Monte and the battery went dead. I attached jumper cables to it and it started right up. I see that it is charging so I backed it out of the garage and let Evan take over. He drove me all over the area for almost a hour. We had a great time. Evan said the steering is a bit loose and the brakes require more pressure to stop the car than he is used to. This was such a great thing for us remembering back to when we drove him to the Woodward Dream Cruise every summer. Picture from 2009 when he was very young and now:

  25. If you are restoring you want as many “ correct parts “ as possible. Most times it’s more expensive but it is correct for the car. Some of the aftermarket parts are not as good as the original ones, so that’s always a thought too.

  26. There IS a difference. Most of the aftermarket boosters are made offshore, even though they have the Delco stamp.. I'll add a link here on how to ID them, but suffice to say, Mike at Brakeboosters.com will not go anywhere near those things. You can either send yours to them, or they'll provide you with a genuine Gm booster. After reading the below info, every time you see a booster at a show, you'll immediately spot a repro booster by the sharp, triangle shaped stamping on the face of the booster. 😁 Scroll about half way down the page: https://www.brakeboosters.com/brake-boosters-history

  27. I just did a quick search of 8 track repair and it seems there are several places that still offer that service fairly affordably. When the time comes there are options.

  28. I have a number of spare Quadrajets from various years. One of the '72s with the slotted arm like yours has had the arm twisted so the top of the arm is closer to the carb than the bottom is. I suspect that was done because someone had the same problem you have. The top of the linkage slipped into the slot and jammed. I can see how twisting the arm a little could stop that from happening. Dan

  29. Ron, I believe your linkage is installed backwards, or it's the wrong one. Also, the hairpin style clip you have is incorrect. Changing it to a new one won't cure the problem. These photos are of my '71 carb. The '72 and later carbs used a slot for the linkage to attach to. The hairpin clip and a slot won't work well together. The hairpin clips are for round holes. The earlier carbs have just a round hole and the larger style clip that I don't know the name of, but a hairpin is ok with them. I think your linkage is going to hang up in that slot, no matter which style clip you use, unless the linkage is turned around. I'm not certain that would even eliminate your issue without seeing how it fits. Dan

  30. I agree Dennis, that's what I did. Find a good core and a good kit. I had a mechanic friend rebuild it
    1 point
  31. Be careful when ordering a rebuilt carb. The part number may be correct but there’s a good chance it’s a restamp loaded with cheap parts. You may be better off finding a complete “old” one and having it restored.

  32. Finding a numbers matching carb shouldn't be that hard. If I remember correctly there is a carb rebuild company that offers numbers correct replacements. I'll see if I can find it online.

  33. if bench racing and early birds are any indication, cars are usually only unattended from 200 215 am and 530 600 am..and as Rob said, at least 10 years and we.ve all been ok...

  34. From my blue oval experience, especially fuel gauge, a pegged gauge is a ground issue. with the ignition on.
    1 point
  35. I replaced a printed circuit for a member about 2 years ago and the new circuit was defective, causing one of the gauges to not function at all. (Dont remember which one) I had to go back in and discovered the new printed circuit had a slice in it across several electrical runs that was difficult to detect. If I recall correctly a pegged meter is indicative of an open circuit, so the way to determine the issue is to take it back apart and visually inspect each electrical run, tracing them to see what is up.

  37. Happy to help you . The slot in the choke linkage doesn't seem right to me for that year. Probably why wire clip got hung up creating an unsafe situation as you described. .

  38. Occasionally you will see them on EBay. They are not being reproduced. Make sure there are 2 lenses within each of them, not 3. Some of the GM fender lenses have 3 lenses within them and are not the correct ones your Monte.
