Remove the shocks and see how it sits. You’re probably looking at springs also. After some member input (thanks Joe) I’m ordering a set of Bilsteins. They are on the high side of the price scale though. About $390 for 4 on Amazon + tax. There are others for 1/2 the price.4 points

I think it has to be moved back and I believe the holes are there for it. I'm sure someone else will chime in that knows for sure.4 points

I don’t know on a small block car because, honestly I never paid attention. But the first picture is of my 70 SS frame ( 454 th400) for reference. The second picture is I of the mount holes, you can see the washer mark towards the front bolt and the other would be the rear hole with hardly no washer marks. The third picture is of my 71SS ( 454 th400). That should give you what you need.3 points

I recommend the Bilstein shocks as well. I have had them for several years and they perform quite well, limiting body roll and helping with cornering immensely. That being said, the ride height is determined by the springs and if your car sits too high you may want to consider swapping those out after checking the height without shocks as recommended by Mark2 points

Wow, Gene Winfield going strong at 96. I love it !!! Being around custom cars, car shows and automotive events keeps him young. He has been customizing cars since the mid 60’s. Come meet this customization auto legend at the Syracuse Nationals !!!2 points

I initially had put KYB shocks on my Monte (72 Custom which includes the larger front sway bar that the F41 suspension offered). Car seemed to be a little soft with those shocks on it, especially on the highway. I decided to try the Bilstein's after that. As mentioned, they cost more, but do seem to ride better and provide more control. Only thing I did was remove the stickers, paint them, then re-apply the trimmed down stickers. I painted the blue boot with black vinyl dye as well. https://www.firstgenmc.com/forums/index.php?/topic/19368-new-guy-here/page/37/#comment-2553892 points

Thanks for joining in on the fun, it was nice talking to you earlier...you should put your car on the Auto Train and bring it too rather than flying. rob2 points

Had breakfast with my Dad and my second favorite mechanic yesterday. I’ve previously mentioned that Terry had owned a ‘71 SS that he sold many years ago, but he’s still finding various parts, memorabilia and literature etc. Yesterday he gave me a few “Super Chevys” magazines from ‘84 and ‘85. Attached are some pix and Monte-related articles… can you find the two unicorns? 🤣😂 Hint: one’s “down under” and one’s pulling the front tires off the ground. There’s a nice 2 page article on the ‘71 SS which appears on the cover of the July 1985 edition of Super Chevys “Chevy Show Place” Looks exactly like Dennis’, minus the bananas in the tailpipes And I’m definitely curious… were some of the owners as listed 40 years ago ever FGMCC members? Are these folks still alive? Are any of the Montes still around under different ownership? Perhaps some of you senior FGMCC members might know of these folks and cars.2 points

Yes sir, that’s PGA endorsed turf. I had that installed after I brought the work dog home because I got tired of repairing the grass every spring with 2 dogs destroying it over the winter. No more muddy paws coming into the house either. It installs over crushed lime stone/sand just like pavers and has drainage holes. Both dogs do their business on it and it cleans up just like grass (easier actually as it’s relatively short), however it somewhat holds odor so I hit it with a deodorizer/neutralizer every so often.2 points

I switched from KYB's to Bilstein's as well.... Haven't got it on the road yet, but after finding that the KYB's had drained out over the winter, I decided that a good shock is worth the extra $$$.1 point

The ‘71 came out of hibernation Friday. The ‘70 was extracted from her cocoon today. Both gave me no issues starting and felt great on the 10 - 12 mile initial ride. The AC compressor on the ‘71 gave up the ghost (the pretty green dye in the refrigerant matches the Lime Green Poly perfectly 😂), but whatya gonna do? New compressor already ordered and hopefully delivered and installed in time for Carlisle. PS - the day I figure out how to get pictures loaded in sequence is the day Dennis’ feet don’t appear in his pictures1 point

Spent the weekend getting her ready for spring.... IF that every comes. lol Changed oil & filter, lubed the front end, re jetted the carb, chased that "mystery wire" down, pulled the rear seat.... and "no", there's no paperwork tucked in there. Put the re conditioned dash and battery back in, added a squirt of gas down the carb...... And "BINGO"!!! She fired right up. Now, just need to get the new tires on and wait out the snow the weather woman says is coming tonight.1 point

The he11 with the mowing our lawn, I am starting to build an Ark. It will need to be large enough to fit my Model A and Monte in along with our kids and grandkids. I have been able to cut our grass once. Now the hedges need trimmed too. This yard work stuff is going to be cutting into my car cruise activities soon. Plus I need to bring the Monte here to the house so I can get the oil and filter changed and the new plugs, plug wires, points and condenser installed and check everything out in prep of the car cruise season and of course the Eastern Meet. rob1 point

I must be a gluten for punishment I finished up my 3rd cut a week ago and it needs it again. My rain gauge is only showing about .7" of liquid snow and I have not emptied it in the last week. Maybe tomorrow afternoon I can fire up the trusty Kubota and get my fourth in. Meanwhile I have gotten the headers bolted up but ran into a snag putting the ac bracket over the headers. I took it off OK but one of the brackets must have shrunk because I cannot get the front bolt into the head it is setting about an 1/8" low ??? do not know why because it came off very easily unless the head is taller but everything else has lined up perfectly. Oh well I needed a break anyhow.1 point

Hey Nick, Welcome back! Seems like you have a pretty good path carved out. That compression ratio is pretty high though, possibly even with the planned open chamber heads. Ask questions from the cylinder head manufacturers that you contact. Lot of people have had trouble with the Sniper systems, as seen on the Holley tech forums that I used to frequent quite often (haven't been there in the last couple months). Could be due to the sheer volume they sold, so problems are in proportion to that? They came out with a Sniper 2 that was supposed to address the issues, but I haven't followed to see if they are better. May want to join the Holley tech forums, do some research first. I have the Holley Terminator Stealth EFI, with Aeromotive fuel tank/pump and have had good luck with that stuff. I also have the ECM control the ignition timing as well. Not sure if the Sniper systems will support that. Something to look into as well perhaps. Now's the time to possibly dump the Sniper, before you get too far. That being said, ask ten people, get ten different answers. FWIW, I have the Terminator stealth system on my Monte & Z/28, very happy. Are you planning to run tail pipes? those make a big difference in noise/sound quality. I have 3" Flowmaster Series 40 Delta Flows on my Camaro with big roller cam, etc. They sound pretty good thru 3" tailpipes. I have the Super 44's on my Monte at 2.5" all the way out back That system sounds good, but a much different engine (454 LS6) than the Camaro. I did try the Super 44's on the Camaro, but ended up with the 40 Deltas on that. Some people here (Tom F) hate the flowmasters, but I also tried his preferred mufflers, and didn't like them, so it's a subjective choice. Post some pics too, we like a lot of them.1 point
